Sections of West River Parkway have been impacted throughout the year due to numerous construction projects. Below is an update on parkway closures heading into the winter.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board appreciates the public's understanding and patience while these critical projects to repair and improve public infrastructure are performed. Please stay away from areas where work is taking place and follow all posted detours and signage.
Bridge Projects
13th-22nd Avenues S; Closure permitted through January 2021
The parkway is closed to motor vehicle traffic between 13th Avenue S and 22nd Avenue S through the end of January for the rehabilitation of 10th Avenue SE Bridge by the City of Minneapolis and repairs to Bridge #9 (the bike/pedestrian bridge serving the Dinkytown Greenway) by the University of Minnesota.
Trail and Wall Replacement Project
25th-27th Streets E; Closure permitted through December 23
The parkway is closed to motor vehicle traffic between 25th Street E and 27th Street E for a regional trail repair and wall replacement project near 26th Street East. Bike and pedestrian traffic is detoured to the west side of the parkway.
This closure is permitted through Dec. 23, but work will likely finish early and the parkway could reopen sooner. Asphalt can’t be placed in cold temperatures, so a temporary gravel path will be used until early spring when the asphalt plants open. Paving and turf grass restoration will be completed in Spring 2021.
Recent Reopenings
Two previous closures ended this fall. The section of parkway between 4th Avenue N and the Stone Arch Bridge parking lot that was closed for the Water Works project is now open. Also, the section of parkway between 33rd and 36th Street E closed for a Met Council sewer cleaning project reopened earlier this fall.
