The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has issued a temporary encampment permit for Brackett Park, for up to 25 tents.
On Sept. 3, MPRB Commissioners approved a resolution granting a Board variance to Safe Haven Encampment at Brackett Park to permit the encampment until October 1, 2020.
Since the Board’s unanimous approval of Resolution 2020-267 on July 15, MPRB staff have been working hard to implement the directives included in the resolution, including reducing the number of encampments in the park system to no more than 20 parks, limiting the number of tents to up to 25 tents per site, and issuing temporary encampment permits. The list of permitted temporary encampments is at www.minneapolisparks.org/encampments.
If you have questions about the permitted encampment, or would like to have MPRB staff try and coordinate a meeting with the permit holder, please email encampmentpermit@minneapolisparks.org.
How We Got Here
Community members may be asking how we got to this point. COVID-19 has created a health, economic, unemployment and homeless crisis in Minneapolis and across the nation. It’s important that Minneapolis residents understand the impact COVID-19 has had on reducing shelter spaces and the impact the Governor’s executive orders have had on encampments and the MPRB. The March 27 “Stay at Home” Executive Order 20-20 prohibited the disbandment of encampments due to the potential risk and spread of COVID-19. The May 17 Executive Order 20-55 prevents local governments from closing encampments unless there are alternate housing, shelter or encampment space or if an encampment has reached the size or status that is a documented threat to public safety. Park Commissioners approved resolutions in June and July that are rooted in the Governor’s orders.
