The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) temporarily closed the Lake Harriet Southeast Beach and Bde Maka Ska North Beach Tuesday when the MPRB’s regular sampling of bacteria found that E. coli bacteria exceeded state specified guidelines. High bacteria levels often occur when the swimming season and fall bird migration season overlap.
While there have been no reports of any illness from swimmers at either beach, the MPRB routinely monitors and proactively closes its beaches if bacteria levels exceed state guidelines. All other MPRB public beaches are open with modified lifeguard services.
The MPRB posts all of its beach bacteria test results online on our beach water quality page. The GIS-based map is optimized for smartphones. When viewing on a desktop, please maximize your screen before selecting data for the best results.
The MPRB will re-sample Lake Harriet Southeast beach Wednesday, August 26 and Bde Maka Ska North beach on Monday, August 31. When the bacteria levels are within state guidelines, the beaches will reopen.
