The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) temporarily closed the Lake Hiawatha Beach and Bde Maka Ska Thomas Beach Tuesday when the MPRB’s regular sampling of bacteria found that E. coli bacteria exceeded state specified guidelines. These closures are likely due to recent storms.
While there have been no reports of any illness from swimmers at either beach, the MPRB routinely monitors and proactively closes its beaches if bacteria levels exceed state guidelines. All other MPRB public beaches are open with modified lifeguard services.
The MPRB posts all of its beach bacteria test results online on our beach water quality page. The GIS-based map is optimized for smartphones. When viewing on a desktop, please maximize your screen before selecting data for the best results.
The MPRB will re-sample the beaches Wednesday, August 12. When the bacteria levels are within state guidelines, the beaches will reopen.
