Please stay off mountain bike trails until temps are consistently above freezing and trail tread is dry
Please do not ride, hike, snowshoe or run on trails in Theodore
Wirth Regional Park and Brownie Lake Park while trail gates are closed.
Every
spring trails close during the freeze/thaw period. Even when temperatures consistently rise above freezing, trails remain closed
until frost is out of the ground and the trail tread is dry. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) considers these trail closures necessary to protect the trails and reduce the amount of erosion
that occurs when bike or foot traffic make ruts in muddy or slushy
trails.
Tire marks or footprints left on a wet trail tread cause
soil erosion which affects the sustainability of the trails. Maintaining
a sustainable trail system in Minneapolis is the foundation of the trail’s very
existence.
Volunteers graciously maintain our trails all year
long. Their efforts are not limitless, so please do your part and abide by
the closed gates and signs. When the gates are open feel free to get out and ride, but use your best judgement when weather changes quickly. Trail volunteers can’t always close the gates immediately.
Volunteers always need a helping hand! They meet at
the trail near the Wirth Chalet every Wednesday evening from spring to
fall. Please visit the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists website for
volunteer opportunities and to find trail conditions for all of the area’s
trails.
The MPRB
mountain bike trails webpage provides maps, trail descriptions and locations
of each of the five trail loops in Minneapolis parks. Once temperatures are consistently above freezing and the
trail tread is dry, the trail will open and we can all enjoy a good adventure!
