The new Northeast Recreation Center is nearly complete
Brand-new recreation center set for early 2018 opening in NE Athletic Field Park; programming ramps up in spring
The new Northeast Recreation Center is on track to open in early 2018! Construction crews have been hard at work since the March groundbreaking ceremony and are on track to finish the building by the end of the year.
Once the new recreation staff gets settled, a robust slate of programming begins in the spring. There will be youth athletics, preschool and senior programming, Rec Plus childcare over the summer and more! Stay tuned for more specifics and a special Grand Opening Celebration planned in late winter/early spring.
New recreation center will feature full-court gym, track, classrooms, exercise/activity space & community kitchen
When it opens in 2018, the Northeast Recreation Center will feature a full-court gym, walking track, classrooms, activity space and a community learning kitchen. The recreation center is being constructed using sustainable building practices and the MPRB will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification upon its completion.
A generous $100,000 donation from Barbara Lupient through the Minneapolis Parks Foundation was critical in bringing this long-awaited project to fruition. Northeast Athletic Field Park has benefitted from longtime support from the Lupient family, which was also instrumental in funding the construction of Jim Lupient Water Park and youth scholarships for programs at the water park.
Plans for the new recreation center were first outlined in the Northeast Athletic Field Park Master Plan, a 25+ year vision for the park approved by the Board of Commissioners in 2014.
New Paths Complete!
Asphalt has been laid for all the new and upgraded pathways throughout Northeast Athletic Field Park. Next week new lights will be installed and areas disturbed by construction will be seeded. The map below shows the location of the new paths.
