Thursday Heat Update: Recreation Centers Closed, Programs Cancelled

Heat Index Surpasses 105 Degrees

With today's extreme heat, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is closing recreation centers without air conditioning and cancelling park and recreation programs. Facilities, programs and events impacted by the heat are listed below


Park visitors are encouraged to cool off at one of the 20 air-conditioned recreation centers, 12 beaches or 63 wading pools that remain open within the Minneapolis Park System.


Lifeguards will remain at guarded beaches until 8 p.m. The Jim Lupient Water Park will also stay open until 8 p.m., one hour past its scheduled 7 p.m. closing time. For water park, beach and wading pool locations and information, visit the Water Activities page at www.minneapolisparks.org. 


Recreation Centers

Recreation centers without air conditioning are closed:

Armatage, Audubon, Brackett, Bryant Square, Central, Corcoran, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fuller, Harrison, Hiawatha School, Keewaydin, Kenny, Lake Nokomis, Linden Hills, Logan, Luxton, Lyndale Farmstead, McRae, Morris, Painter, Pearl, Peavey, Sibley, Stewart, Van Cleve, Waite, Whittier, Windom Northeast 

 

Recreation centers with air conditioning remain open:
Bottineau, Central, Corcoran, Coyle, Creekview, East Phillips, Elliot, Farview, Folwell, Kenwood, Lake Hiawatha, Longfellow, Loring, Luxton, Lynnhurst, Matthews, North Commons, Pershing, Phillips, Powderhorn, Webber, Windom South

 

Rec Plus Childcare

All of the MPRB's childcare programs at recreation centers without air conditioning will close. Rec Plus families have been notified and Rec Plus staff will stay on site until all children have been picked up.


Other Park Facilities

Trails, golf courses, playgrounds, picnic areas, gardens, etc. remain open during exceptionally hot weather. Park patrons visiting these facilities are advised to take caution and follow heat safety guidelines. 


Sports

Youth Sports

The MPRB has cancelled youth sports games and notified teams of cancellations.

 

Adult Sports

The MPRB does not cancel adult sports games; however, teams may choose to forfeit at their discretion. Adult sports teams and players are advised to take caution and follow heat safety guidelines when playing. 


Outdoor Music and Movies in the Parks

All of this evening's music and movie events are cancelled:

  • Jeromy Darling at Bryant Square Park
  • Matt Hannah at Minnehaha Park
  • Tzofim Friendship Caravan at Lake Harriet
