Beginning in mid-May, construction crews will begin work to modify the northwest stormwater basin at the Columbia Golf Course. The modifications, which are scheduled to be completed in June, will convert the basin to an ecologically enhanced stormwater pond with new native plantings.
These updates are a continuation of the stormwater and habitat improvements at the Columbia Golf Course and Park that began in 2020. They will help ensure optimal functioning of the basin when the final stormsewer connections are made and the system begins operating at its full capacity.
Public Impacts
- Residents can expect to see an increase in truck traffic in and out of the basin from approximately mid-May to mid-June.
- The road will all remain open during this construction work; however, temporary lane closures on 5th Street NE may be necessary as crews bring in heavy equipment. Workers will be on hand to direct traffic.
- The bike trail and pedestrian path along 5th Street NE will be detoured to the west side of the street for a portion of the project.
- No impacts to golf play are expected.
Project Background
Beginning in 2020, project partners constructed stormsewer improvements and a variety green infrastructure at the Columbia Golf Course and Columbia Park. These features will treat polluted stormwater runoff draining from 813 acres, 75 percent of which is currently receiving no water quality treatment. In addition to keeping pollutants out of the nearby Mississippi River, the project will reduce flooding (both in the neighborhoods located within the drainage area and the golf course itself), improve habitat, and enhance golf play and other recreational opportunities.
After final adjustments to the northwestern stormwater basin, the project will be largely complete. Partners will then make stormsewer connections from the nearby neighborhoods. Those connections will allow the stormwater improvements within the Columbia Golf Course and Park to operate at their full potential for both stormwater treatment and flood management.
Project partners are now making final adjustments to the northwestern stormwater basin in preparation for making the final stormsewer connections and making the system fully operational.
