Governor Dayton announces Metropolitan Council Appointments Notice and Process

Applications accepted until January 9, 2015

Saint Paul – December 22, 2014 – Governor Mark Dayton today announced that applications are being accepted for seats on the Metropolitan Council, the regional planning agency that operates the regional bus and rail system, collects and treats wastewater and plans regional parks.

The Secretary of State’s office published the vacancies on Monday, November 1, 2014.  Anyone interested in applying for membership on the Council must complete an Open Appointments Application Form.  Application forms may be downloaded from the Secretary of State’s Office from its website at www.sos.state.mn.us or by calling 651.556.0643.  Applicants are asked to attach a current resume to their application, along with any letters of recommendation.

According to statute, applicants must be a resident of the district for which they are seeking appointment and knowledgeable about urban and metropolitan affairs.

Applications submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office by 4:30 p.m. on January 9, 2015 will be considered.

A seven-member nominating committee, which recommends candidates for the Metropolitan Council to the governor, will host public meetings to accept statements from, or on behalf of, applicants for the positions.

Governor Dayton has designated the following citizens to serve on the Metropolitan Council Nominating Committee:

Mary Hamann-Roland – Mayor of Apple Valley
Janet Williams – Mayor of Savage
Scott Lund – Mayor of Fridley
Mary Guiliani Stephens – Mayor of Woodbury
Gail Dorfman – Former Hennepin County Commissioner
Melvin Carter – Former St. Paul City Council member
Will Roach - Director of Business Development at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP

Applicants selected to be interviewed by the nominating committee will testify at a public meeting.  They will receive details on the format in advance of the meeting.

The Metropolitan Council coordinates planning and development in the seven-county metropolitan area and directly operates regional services, including bus and rail transit and wastewater collection and treatment.  The Metropolitan Council consists of 16 metropolitan citizens appointed from geographically defined districts in the seven-county metropolitan area and a chair.  All 17 members are appointed by the governor to four-year terms that are co-terminus with the governor.
