Bison, new visitors, and skiers: investing in regional parks

Chair Charlie Zelle

Our regional parks and trails draw more visitors than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon combined. This year, the Met Council, 10 regional park agencies, Governor Tim Walz, and Minnesota legislators partnered to make them even better. Legislators recently approved millions of dollars in funding to help protect bison in the Spring Lake Park Reserve, inspire teenage skiers at Battle Creek Winter Recreation Area, fill in the “missing link” of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, and much more. Learn more about our recent legislative triumph and how funding will help enhance our parks.

Transit outreach addresses needs, improves safety

Outreach staffer offers support to person in community

Blue Line Extension: Community creates anti-displacement recommendations through deep engagement

Blue Line work group gathers to study displacement

In response to concerns of displacement around the planned Blue Line Extension, Hennepin County and the Met Council launched a first-of-its-kind community-oriented, anti-displacement initiative. For more than a year, the diverse stakeholders comprising the Anti-Displacement Work Group gathered to study and recommend ways to minimize physical, cultural, and economic displacement along the planned light rail. Read the group's recommendations report it published in May.

Artists commissioned to create more inclusive, welcoming park signs

Local artists with artwork for regional parks

Ramsey County and the Met Council partnered with five local artists to welcome visitors to regional parks with fresh new park and trail signs. Each artist brought a unique perspective and identity to their designs, which are featured in kiosks in Ramsey County parks. The artwork supports the Ramsey County 21st Century Parks Vision to better engage with an ever-changing community. Take a look at the designs, hear from the artists, and learn about our efforts to make our parks more welcoming.
