As we transition into a new season, we want to highlight some important milestones and transitions that happened over the last few months.

Gold Line BRT construction underway

Utility companies began relocation of their services in April 2022. Ames Construction was awarded the civil construction contract for the Gold Line BRT project in early July and began construction activities in September. SRF Consulting Group was also awarded a contract to support and assist Met Council with the construction administration.

Over the past few months, construction crews have been working throughout the Gold Line corridor on utility relocations, site clearing, and starting wall and bridge construction around the new Bielenberg Drive bridge site over I-94 in Oakdale and Woodbury, and around the I-94 and Hwy. 61 interchange near the Etna Street Station site.

Crews will wind down most construction activities over the winter and will restart activities in spring 2023 as weather allows. Construction will continue on the Etna Street and Bielenberg Drive bridges. We will share more information on the 2023 construction schedule and activities starting in late winter and kick off the construction season by hosting several public meetings throughout the Gold Line corridor.

Groundbreaking ceremony highlights

To celebrate the start of construction, the Gold Line project held a groundbreaking event on October 19 in Woodbury. Project partners, federal, state, county and city leaders, and members of the public attended to mark the important milestone. Met Council Chair Charlie Zelle, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, Ramsey County Commissioners Trista MatasCastillo and Rafael Ortega, and Washington County Commissioners Lisa Weik, and Stan Karwoski spoke at the event and highlighted the years-long partnerships and hard work of project staff to bring Gold Line to fruition.

Leadership transitions

“As the METRO Gold Line BRT project begins construction, we must pause to remember how we arrived at this point through the leadership of three individuals. Outgoing Washington County Commissioner Lisa Weik and Ramsey County Commissioner Jim McDonough tirelessly advocated for this project for years. The public will benefit from their dedication and hard work long after they are out of office. Former Gold Line project director Christine Beckwith skillfully brought this project through the engineering phase before moving on to lead the Blue Line Extension Light Rail Transit project.’’  - Metropolitan Council and Gold Line Corridor Management Committee Chair Charlie Zelle.

Thank you, Commissioner McDonough, Commissioner Weik and Christine Beckwith for all you have done in support of Gold Line.

Thank you, Gold Line communities

We want to thank the Gold Line communities and stakeholders for your participation over the last decade. Your feedback and input on improving transit access to the east metro has been invaluable. Beginning with the Gateway Corridor Study in 2010 and through Gold Line BRT project development, environmental review and design over the last few years, we would not have reached where we are today without your involvement. We appreciate your time and effort to help make sure Gold Line reflects the needs of your community.  We look forward to celebrating the start of Gold Line service with you in 2025.
