Good planning is based on good data

Charlie Zelle

Good data is the foundation of good planning. But it isn't enough. The values, viewpoints, and hopes and dreams of the region's residents will also guide us into the future. More from Council Chair Charlie Zelle.

Signs of progress on transit safety

METRO Gold Line construction under way

People gather for Gold Line groundbreaking

We’re one step closer to Minnesota’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) service to primarily use bus-only lanes. Construction is underway on the METRO Gold Line, a 10-mile corridor generally north and near Interstate 94 serving Saint Paul, Maplewood, Landfall, Oakdale, and Woodbury. All-day service in both directions is slated for 2025.

Housing voucher holders face difficulty finding rental units

Family in their back yard.

A tough rental market for affordable housing is making it difficult for many families in the Twin Cities region to use their rental assistance housing vouchers. The Met Council is considering an increase to our payment standards, or rent limits, in certain zip codes in the communities we serve to provide more options for voucher holders. But it is a balancing act, because the higher Metro HRA's portion of the rent, the fewer households we can serve.

Residential Passes benefit both property owners and tenants

Residential pass holder Sarah Cohen

Accessibility is a significant factor in choosing where we live. Thanks to the Metro Transit Residential Pass — a deeply discounted unlimited-use transit pass designed specifically for multifamily developments — many area tenants are riding transit for free. Property owners pay for the passes, using them to attract renters while reducing the need for parking. Find out how the Residential Pass boosts access and affordability.

A draft of the report is expected next year, with the final EIS planned for 2024. View the full scope of the report.

Prairie restoration in regional parks reconnects people to the land

Boy collects prairie wildflower seeds

170 million acres of prairie land once stretched from southern Wisconsin to western Montana and from central Texas to Canada. These prairies depended on large animals, like bison, to graze the land, work the soil, and spread seed. Today, regional parks rely heavily on volunteers to play this role, trampling the land and disturbing seed pods, while collecting seeds. Prairie restoration is an important activity in the regional parks.
