Developing intercultural competence – baseline training begins in earnest

Syman

This week the next phase of the Met Council’s initiative to build cultural competence included training for more than 500 Council managers and supervisors who are attending the 3-hour, instructor-led, virtual seminar “Foundations of Intercultural Competence: It’s Developmental.” Four sessions took place this week and the remaining are scheduled for mid-January.

During this important training, participants take a deep dive into culture, define terms to ensure shared meaning and understanding, and learn about the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and its theory of intercultural development. The training provides individual and organizational insight to the stages of development on the path toward cultural competence, where people can understand the impact of culture and appropriately shift perspective and behavior to improve diversity, inclusion, and equity outcomes. The aggregate results of the inventory will also help guide the decisions about additional training and skill-building that will be helpful in the future.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and we in Human Resources are excited to be collaborating to implement this important initiative to foster a more equitable, inclusive organization. This effort is sponsored by Chair Charlie Zelle, our organizational senior leadership and the Council’s articulated strategic priority to reduce racial disparities. All Council employees will be part of this initiative as the plan progresses in 2021.

Wellness Around the Council

Wellness Champions hear from health equity panel

Fit For Life is happy to introduce the theme for our 2021 programming - Health Equity! In late November of this year, a dedicated group of Met Council employees shared in a panel discussion on this topic of great importance.

The Fit For Life team, in partnership with equity experts and enthusiasts across the Met Council, brought the Wellness Champions together for an illuminating conversation and education session. As Wellness Champions, they have the unique opportunity to set the tone for their location and spread the message of health equity.

Health is a human right and unfortunately, the inequities that show up outside the workplace have an effect on the health and well-being of our fellow employees. This is why Fit For Life and the Wellness Champions are committed to providing health and well-being opportunities for all. This in turn helps our employees provide equitable resources to our community making it possible for everyone to stay safe, be healthy, and thrive. Read the full story on MetNet.

You’ll see more from Fit For Life and your fellow employees throughout 2021 as we spread the message and action of health equity.

Wellness Around the Council is a monthly HR Connect series from the Fit For Life team that features initiatives, groups, and individuals who are exhibiting their well-est selves at work, and beyond – from fitness to healthy eating to mental health. If you’d like more information, contact HealthPartners on-site Health Coach Ashley.Starr@metc.state.mn.us.
