Employees and managers, take action now to move forward in the performance evaluation process

Syman

The next step in the performance evaluation process is right around the corner. Employees are encouraged to complete their year-end check-in form by Oct. 23.

Managers, be sure each employee has performance goals and the required check-in has been completed. These two tasks must be done before managers can access the employee performance review form. Take a minute now to schedule your calendar to complete all the necessary steps.

Visit the Performance Management page on MetNet for information and instructions on Perform, performance evaluations, and competencies. Listed below are the deadlines for the tasks employees and managers must complete for the year-end performance evaluation.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Get screened

Finding breast cancer early and getting state-of-the-art cancer treatment are the most important strategies to prevent deaths from breast cancer. Breast cancer that’s found early, when it’s small and has not spread, is easier to treat successfully. The American Cancer Society has screening guidelines for women at average risk of breast cancer, and for those at higher-than-average risk for breast cancer.

The Mammo a-go-go truck, with its mobile mammography, makes it easy to get your annual screening taken care of. Get screened at one of the following locations:

  • Metro Plant
    Thursday, October 22, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Truck will be parked in front of the admin building outside the gate
  • Heywood
    Tuesday, October 27, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Truck will be parked by door 16 (bus pull in door) across from TCC

Call 952-993-3700 to schedule your screening, and let the scheduler know if you'd like to make an appointment at the Metro Plant or Heywood.

Let's thrive in a virtual environment

Logo

In recent years we have seen the rise of remote work or teleworking for many employers, including Met Council.  With the COVID-19 outbreak, many people who may never have left the comforts of a traditional office environment have been thrust into remote work.

Remote work has its advantages, but also its challenges. LOD is offering live, virtual classes to help those who are working from home make the most of this arrangement. All classes will be conducted through Webex from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

  • For Supervisors/Managers
Still Remote: Supervising & Staying Connected with Your Virtual Teams
    Thursday, Nov 5 and 19, 2020
  • For Employees
Still Remote: Staying Successful in a Remote Work Environment
    Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020

To enroll, access Learn and click the library icon. Click the arrow to the right of "A-Learning Institute" and click "LOD Classes Open for Registration." Locate the class and register.

Contact Learn@metc.state.mn.us if you need assistance with registration.

Open Enrollment coming Nov. 2 – Nov. 20

Open Enrollment is getting closer. It’s a good idea to start thinking about your options. Health plan. Dental plan. Flexible spending account. Vision plan. Supplemental life insurance.

Once Open Enrollment begins on Monday, Nov. 2, you can make your selections. Open Enrollment ends on Friday, Nov. 20. During that period, you can:

  • Choose to keep your current medical or vision plan or choose another.
  • Add or subtract yourself or family members from the medical, dental and vision plans.
  • Enroll in one or more flexible spending accounts (FSAs) with pre-tax dollars – for health care that’s not covered by your plan, dependent care, and work-related parking costs.

Your Open Enrollment packet will arrive at your home mailbox about mid-October. You’ll get a separate packet of enrollment instructions just before open enrollment starts. Find more information about the health plan at:

Health Plan Basics – definitions and general information (8 min.)

Health Plan Specifics – information on each medical plan and tips on how to choose a medical plan (16 min.)

Due to COVID-19, Benefits staff will be offering online information sessions and will be available for phone calls. There will not be in-person/face-to-face benefits fairs this year.

"Ask HR" Webex event reminder

Please join Human Resources for the next "Ask HR" topic on Promotions tomorrow, Friday, at 11:00 a.m. Staff received an Outlook invitation with the information to join the Webex.

The purpose of these sessions is to provide access to and information about HR's work on equity. Future topics will include training and development opportunities, and employee retention.

The two sessions on Recruitment and Selection have been posted on MetNet on the Human Resources under "Building Diversity" in the far-left column. At the bottom of the page, you can also find Human Resources Work Plan to build an equitable workplace (PDF).

I've selected my candidate, when can they start?

Congratulations! You've selected your candidate and the approvals are complete, but there is still work to be done before the new hire or promoted employee can start.

  • Background Verification - The recruiter submits a request for a background verification using the Council’s contracted vendor. Depending upon the position, the verification will include some or all of the following: Employment, education, criminal conviction history, Department of Transportation or Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Social Security number, Criminal Justice Information Services, references, and driving record.

For certain internal positions, where a current employee is moving from a non-supervisory position to a supervisory or managerial position, a criminal background check is required.

Human Resources processes background checks to ensure a proper search has been conducted per Council Procedure 4-1m Background CheckIf there is evidence of one or more convictions, Human Resources reviews each conviction on a case-by-case basis to determine if there is a relationship to the position and follows Minnesota Statutes Chapter 364 (Criminal Offenders and Rehabilitation Act).

  • Pre-Employment Physical or Drug Testing - Once a formal job offer has been extended to the candidate, the recruiter schedules the candidate for a drug test and physical, if applicable  - typically safety sensitive positions.

Next week's article will highlight job offer salary analysis.
