Spirit Airlines, the fastest-growing air carrier in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market,
will soon be moving from
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s (MSP) Terminal 2-Humphrey to MSP’s Terminal 1- Lindbergh.
Starting
Jan. 27 with its 5:26 a.m. arrival and 6:17 a.m. departure, Spirit will begin
operating out of Terminal 1’s Concourse E.
All
Spirit Airlines’ passengers will want to take note of this change and date.
Spirit passengers with departure dates prior to but arrival dates after Jan.
27, should especially take note, as they will be leaving from Terminal 2 and
returning at Terminal 1. Both terminals are connected via light rail, and there
is no charge for riding between terminals.
Spirit’s
ticket counter at Terminal 1 will be located on the north end of the ticketing
level near American and US Airways and adjacent to Security Checkpoint 2.
Spirit
Airlines began service at MSP in May 2012, initially flying to only two cities:
Chicago and Las Vegas. Less than two months later it announced it was adding
daily service to Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) and seasonal service to Ft. Lauderdale
and Fort Meyers. Then, in early 2013, it announced new seasonal service to
Denver and Phoenix, as well as expanded service to DFW. In August 2013, Spirit
announced three new destinations (Tampa, Orlando and Los Angeles). And in May
2014, Spirit began service to Houston and Baltimore.
Today
at MSP Spirit operates 11 flights daily.
After
Jan. 27, Spirit Airline passengers can still choose to park at MSP Value
Parking Ramps at Terminal 2 and take the light rail back to Terminal 1 to save
$8 a day in parking fees.
The
move will provide Spirit with more flexibility and space (two dedicated gates
versus one common-use gate) and, in the short-term, will allow Sun Country and
Southwest Airlines room to expand service at Terminal 2. To meet longer-term
increases in aircraft gate demand at Terminal 2, the Metropolitan Airports
Commission will begin construction of three additional aircraft gates there
this spring. Those gates are expected to be completed by fall 2016.

MSP Airport offers service from every major US airline except one: JetBlue.
(We’re working on it! We promise.)
On December 29,
2014, AirTran Airways
ceased to exist as it flew its final flight from
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International to Tampa Bay International.
Southwest
Airlines acquired AirTran in September 2011.
Southwest began
flying from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s (MSP) Terminal 2-Humphrey in March 2009
with eight daily flights to Chicago’s Midway Airport. (AirTran Airways was also based at Terminal 2.)
Less than a month later the airline announced it would
expand its operation to include three daily flights to Denver.
To book a flight
on Southwest Airlines go to www.southwest.com or 1-800-I-FLY-SWA. (Note: Southwest Airlines will not show up on Web
sites that aggregate and sort other airlines’ flight schedules and fares. You
must search and book on its site.)
Looking for something different to pass the time at MSP? Next time you’re flying through, take the unique opportunity to check out our newest arts amenity: the see18 film screening room on Concourse C.
A first-of-its kind in a North American airport, the see18 screening room was created as a relaxing space where passengers can get a taste of what Minnesota and the region has to offer in film. Just make your way to Gate C18 and follow the brightly patterned carpet right into the space.
The MSP Arts and Culture program, responsible for the content and operation of the screening room, partnered with the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul to curate the best that Minnesota and the Upper Midwest has to offer. And planning is already in the works for the next round of films, shorts and documentaries, this time with assistance and content provided by the good people at Twin Cities Public Television.
Currently eight short films are showing in rotation. Topics and genres run the gamut. Whether it’s an animated short about a lumberjack who knits or an inside look at Minnesota’s history of improvisational theatre or a dramatic documentary about one couple’s fiftieth anniversary, there’s something sure to pique your interest.
Love hockey?
Then this one is for you. Not a hockey fan? You’ll still love the food and
views of the airfield at this new Terminal 2-Humphrey venue.
In December, Minneapolis-St.
Paul International Airport welcomed the Minnesota
Wild restaurant to its ever-expanding dining options at Terminal 2. From
the Minnesota shaped hockey puck wall to the history of hockey masks display,
this new restaurant celebrates everything Wild and everything hockey. Even
better, the restaurant boasts an upscale bar menu that includes salads,
sliders, nachos, flatbread pizzas, burgers, and classic sandwiches. Located
across from Security Checkpoint 2, the restaurant replaces Fletcher’s Wharf.
For those
with less time, now open and adjacent to
the Minnesota Wild restaurant is the MSP|MKT,
a full service marketplace and carvery serving thick-stacked deli sandwiches
made with freshly shaved meats and gourmet cheeses as well as crisp salads and
artisan pizzas and flatbread. Local produce is a focus of this new eatery,
which purchases from Minnesota farms whenever possible.
Airport food is
a world away from what it used to be – and we’ve got the proof! So next time
you’re flying out of Terminal 2, consider arriving early and enjoy a delicious pre-boarding
meal with something special from one of these two new venues.
Looking to
keep more cash in your pocket for that spring break trip? You’re in luck.
Terminal 1-Lindbergh passengers can save $8 per day by parking in Terminal
2-Humphrey’s Value ramp and taking the light rail to Terminal 1 for their
flight. That’s $56 a week you now have to spend on that kite-boarding lesson,
trinkets for the grandchildren or tropical drinks at the pool.
Just
make your way to the Orange ramp at Terminal 2, park and follow the signs to
Light Rail Transit. If you have a large group with lots of luggage or need
additional assistance due to mobility concerns, you can also take the Special
Needs Shuttle, leaving every 15 minutes or so from the ground transportation
center on the ground level of the parking ramp.
Speaking of
parking…Have you heard about our Surepark® application? Created to help travelers make
decisions about where to park at MSP, Surepark® tells you how full MSP’s ramps
are at any given time. For real-time parking information, you can call 1-877-359-7275 for an audible message, go
online, or have a text message sent to you as you’re on your way to the
airport. Check it out the next time you’re ready to head for MSP.

In 2015, the
Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) will embark on a two-phase rebid
campaign of nearly all MSP Airport
concessions units. A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be issued in early 2015
for interested companies to submit their concession concepts. The focus of the
first phase is primarily retail-oriented, though proposals for more than a
dozen food and beverage establishments will be sought as well.
An RFP ensures all companies have a fair, timely and clear path to present
concepts for consideration. Additionally, it enables the MAC to review, compare
and evaluate all concept submissions during one period of time, using the same
prescribed criteria, and to contract with the operator who best meets the goals
for each particular opportunity.

We all know

certainly no exception. With almost 20,000 airport workers and 90,000
passengers traversing the airport every day, we thought it would be fun to show
you, in less than two and a half minutes, just how much happens around here in
12 hour period.
Sit back and buckle
up!
