As MSP Airport continues its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Badging Office is also seeing increased visits from new hires and existing employees.
The Badging Office’s online process has helped applications move through the approval process quickly and with fewer delays. Please continue to steer employees to the online platform and alert the Badging Office if you need any information or training tips related to the online badging experience.
Some highlights from Badging Office activity in 2022:
- New badges issued: up 27% compared to 2021
- Badge renewals: down 5.5%, which reflects the high turnover rate we are seeing across the airport
- Total Badging transactions: up 14.5%
Both SIDA violation retraining (35% increase) and security violations that resulted in a badge suspension or revocation (49% increase) were up significantly in 2022. Please remind existing employees and new hires to make certain they know the rules related to using their badge, and related to their actions in and around secure areas of the airport.
A new, larger gate facility is under construction that will replace the current Gate 269 guard house this spring. The entrance is located near the Drivers' Training Center on the south side of the MSP Airport airfield. Many contractors working on the airfield use the gate.
The new gate facility will allow for screening of both vehicles and individuals. The facility will have walk-thru magnetometers and an X-ray machine that will give the Airport Police Department the ability to screen individuals and their personal belongings. We are highly recommending that employees who wear safety boots use composite-toed boots (instead of steel-toed) for two reasons.
- Composite-toed boots don’t require employees to remove their boots to pass through the magnetometer.
- Keeping your composite-toed boots on means that you won’t have to potentially get your feet wet from moisture on the floor when it’s raining or snowing.
We will provide more information about the new Gate 269 facility in coming months. In the meantime, the move to composite-toed boots for regular users of the gate is the priority.

As spring arrives each year, the Badging Office begins offering the required retraining courses for Signers.
Many of you have already seen email notifications of your upcoming retraining courses. If you’ve received an email already, follow the instructions and get signed up for your course.
If you haven’t received the email, be patient; it’s arriving soon. Classes will begin in March. The courses are either in-person or virtual, but either way involve instructor-led training.
We look forward to seeing you in coming weeks for retraining!
If your employees are bringing any “tools of the trade” into the secure area of the airport, they have responsibility for those items. Please remind employees that any tools they bring in must remain inaccessible to others and under their control – or locked up – at all times.
There are a significant number of contractors at the airport at any given time, and it’s important that each individual knows the protocol for bringing in tools. Signers need to make sure employees are aware they need to follow the rules consistently.
The Badging Office appreciates your cooperation.
