A new 3,500-foot runway opened earlier this summer at Lake Elmo Airport (21D), part of a multi-year project that improved the airfield's infrastructure and overall safety.
About 40 students from throughout Minnesota got a comprehensive tour of MSP Airport (MSP) in July as part of a National Summer Transportation Institute program that is designed to help students explore careers in science, technology and engineering.
In addition to immersing students in grade 7 through 9 in these STEM disciplines, the program – which is administered by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) – also brings students on several transportation-related field trips.
At MSP, the students toured the Silver Ramp, Airport Police Department, Energy Management Center and many areas of Terminal 1 – including the trams, Concourse C and a TSA security line.
Employees of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns and operates MSP, provided tours of the various areas of the airport.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) Runway 17/35 will be closed for up to six weeks for a runway safety area restoration beginning on Sept. 6, 2022.
The runway safety area is the area adjacent to a runway that is designed to reduce the risk of airplane damage in the event of an aircraft excursion from the runway.
The safety area must be maintained so that it is clear of debris, and drained and graded so that it isable to support aircraft, snow removal equipment and aircraft rescue and firefighting operations.
The work for this project is intended to restore runway safety area slopes to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) specifications.
To ensure the safety of the construction crews and aircraft, aircraft operating at MSP will use Runways 12L/30R and 12R/30L while Runway 17/35 is closed. When one or more of the runways are closed, the arrivals and/or departures that would normally use that runway will be directed by air traffic control to use an open runway. You may also notice unusual lights, sounds and equipment on the airfield.
Runway use information and flight activity are available on the MAC FlightTracker. Anyone with questions about runway closures may call the Community Relations Office at 612-726-9411.
MSP Airport was ranked #16 in North America by total passenger numbers in 2021, a position that the airport has held frequently and a reminder that traffic recovered positively during the pandemic.
The data, from Airports Council International -- North America, shows MSP served 25.2 million passengers last year.
MSP, along with our partner airlines and airport businesses, appreciates passengers' ongoing enthusiasm for flying.

Summer is in its final month, back-to-school preparation is well underway and the Minnesota State Fair is already on its sixth day. Summer travelers are still busy fitting in trips out of MSP, and with that pent-up demand in mind, we have an ongoing survey that gauges attitudes about air travel. Your answers are helping shape the MSP experience.
One thing we already know: Travel is back. Our surveys are now showing that 88 percent of respondents would be willing to get on a plane tomorrow, a figure that's almost triple what it was at the start of the pandemic.
Even if you’ve already taken the survey, please consider taking it again, as your thoughts and answers may have changed over time. We also add new questions each month. This month, we're asking "Do you plan to travel between now and year's end? If so, where?"
Among topics that survey takers have shown an interest in: MSP's safety initiatives related to the pandemic, which are a part of our Travel Confidently MSP program.
