Summer events start rolling out soon at the general aviation airports operated by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), and you’re invited to join in the fun. The events are a great way to meet up with old friends and new aviation enthusiasts.
Crystal Airport will host an open house and pancake breakfast on Father’s Day, June 19. The popular event is expected to draw a crowd again this year. Find all the details at this website.
Also on Father’s Day, Lake Elmo Airport will host a pancake breakfast - a longstanding community event that attracts pilots and family members. Find more details at this web page.
You can find information about all the other events held at the MAC’s general aviation airports at the events page on the metroairports.org website. Air Expo at Flying Cloud Airport and the Pan-o-Prog fly-in Breakfast at Airlake Airport in Lakeville are both coming up in July.
A unique facility opened on May 23 inside MSP Airport, equipped with a mock 42-seat aircraft cabin that will be used for air travel-related training.
Located near Gate C16, the mock cabin – which is part of the Travel Confidently MSP Education Center – is designed for a variety of uses.
- The Navigating MSP program – which offers free practice runs through the airport for children and adults who might benefit from a pre-flight experience – will utilize the cabin
- Service animals can be trained at the center to practice boarding and travel procedures with their owners or trainers
- Wheelchair service providers and airline cabin crews can be trained in the use of aisle chairs for boarding or de-boarding passengers
- MSP’s firefighters and police can use the space to train for onboard emergencies
At the grand opening of the center, Rick King, chair of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, noted that the education center promotes travel equity by helping remove barriers associated with air travel. He also thanked Delta Air Lines for its donation of the aircraft cabin, which was moved into the terminal piece by piece.
Airport Foundation MSP also played a key role in the new education center, bringing in Juxtaposition Arts to create artwork for the plane cabin and new facility. Juxtaposition is a North Minneapolis-based art and design center staffed by teens.

The summer travel season officially arrives this weekend! MSP Airport is anxious to hear the travel plans you're considering, and what influences your decisions. We have an ongoing survey that gauges attitudes about air travel and the answers are helping shape the MSP experience.
One thing we already know: Travel is back. Our surveys are now showing that 88 percent of respondents would be willing to get on a plane tomorrow, a figure that's almost triple what it was at the start of the pandemic.
Even if you’ve already taken the survey, please consider taking it again, as your thoughts and answers may have changed over time. We also add new questions each month. This month, we're asking what's your most frequent travel destination?
Among topics that survey takers have shown an interest in: MSP's safety initiatives related to the pandemic, which are all a part of our Travel Confidently program.
