The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) operates one of the largest aviation systems in the United States, made up of six general aviation airports and MSP International Airport.
The general aviation airports, also known as reliever airports, provide vital air service throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area. A video (run time 2:47) recently produced by the MAC provides an overview of how general aviation airports function and the people they serve.
Summer will arrive before you know it, and when it does, the MAC's reliever airports will be ready to kick off the annual events that draw large crowds of aviation enthusiasts.
The events are scattered across the Twin Cities at the six reliever airports operated by the MAC.

The fun starts in June at the Lake Elmo Airport, and continues through September at Flying Cloud Airport. Visit the websites linked below, or visit this page on the MAC's website to find more information as the events approach.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is extending the duration of its noise mitigation program, one of the most unique and comprehensive in the United States.
The next phase of MSP’s Noise Mitigation Program will extend eight years, from 2025-2032, providing noise reducing modifications to program-eligible houses and apartments. Since the first phase of the program began in 1992, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which operates MSP, has invested more than $510 million mitigating noise in 15,000 single-family homes and multi-family units in neighborhoods near the airport.
“The MAC has long been an industry leader in working with community stakeholders and homeowners to reduce interior aircraft noise in the most impacted homes around Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport,” said Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC. “This program extends authorization for the MAC to assist homeowners based on federal standards and other program criteria.”

As MSP Airport celebrates Earth Month, we look back on our accomplishments over the last year and forward to our ongoing commitment to sustainability.
In 2021:
- MSP solar panels generated more than 4 million kilowatt-hours of energy, enough electricity to power 577 homes for one year.
- High-efficiency bathroom fixtures at MSP saved 13 million gallons of water, enough to fill 19 Olympic-size swimming pools.
- MSP concessionaires recovered 20 tons of food for donation to Loaves & Fishes, enough for 33,300 meals.
The MAC recently partnered with the Minnesota Composting Council during Earth Month to offer employees compost for use in yards and gardens.
Employees of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) also participated in a clothing drive in April that benefits Prism, a non-profit based in Golden Valley.
Visit MSP's environmental sustainability page for more information about sustainability initiatives and 2030 goals for emissions, water, waste and engagement.
The MAC, the owner and operator of MSP, is committed to sustainability and enhancing its economic viability, operational effectiveness, environment and social responsibility.
When it comes to safety, Laura Herrmann (pictured) has all the bases covered.
Herrmann’s resume of professional credentials, her active involvement in numerous humanitarian initiatives, and her interest in piloting aircraft recently brought her recognition as the 2022 FAA Safety Team Representative of the Year.
Herrmann, of St. Bonifacius, Minn., achieved her private pilot, instrument and advanced ground instructor ratings at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie, where she's been flying for 22 years. She was also recently named Flying Cloud's 2021 Operator of the Year.
The recognition from the FAA and National General Aviation awards program highlights the important leadership roles of individuals in promoting safety, education, and professionalism throughout the aviation industry.
Herrmann is also involved with Pilots and Paws, a program that allows her to put her piloting experience and instrument rating to use as she brings animals to their new homes. The story behind her accomplishments and activities speaks to the many reasons behind the FAA safety award. Read all about it on this web page (third profile down).

The summer travel season arrives soon, and MSP Airport is anxious to hear the travel plans you're considering, and what influences your decisions. We have an ongoing survey that gauges attitudes about air travel and the answers are helping shape the MSP experience.
One thing we already know: Travel is back. Our surveys are now showing that 88 percent of respondents would be willing to get on a plane tomorrow, a figure that's almost triple what it was at the start of the pandemic.
Even if you’ve already taken the survey, please consider taking it again, as your thoughts and answers may have changed over time. We also add new questions each month. This month, we're asking what green or sustainability initiatives would you like to see at MSP?
Among topics that survey takers have shown an interest in: MSP's safety initiatives related to the pandemic, which are all a part of our Travel Confidently program.
