As temperatures start to drop and heavy jackets are pulled from summer storage, we start to see more security badges improperly displayed on outerwear at MSP.
Particularly among ramp employees who work outdoors in the cold, badges often are not displayed above the waist and on their outermost layer of clothing, as required. Please remind workers to keep their badges properly displayed.
In addition, please be prepared to remove winter outerwear when being screened at TSA Checkpoints or Employee Screening Portals. Security Officers at the Employee Portals may make judgement calls on which outer garments must be removed. Please note that failing to comply or interfering with the screening process could lead to badge suspensions or the loss access to the Employee Screening Portals.
Remember also that during extreme cold weather, when temperatures drop below zero, badges may not work properly when scanned on a badge reader. Badges are not permanently damaged by the cold and will work again once they are warmed up in a room-temperature environment.
However, please do not put your badge near heating devices -- such as radiators or space heaters -- which can damage the chip embedded in the badge.
As you talk to employees in coming weeks and months, please remind them of these cold-weather requirements.
