Bob Koenig, who has more than 20 years experience with the Airport Fire Department at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), was recently named as MSP's new fire chief.
The airport's full-service fire department responds to structural fires, emergency medical calls and provides a variety of other critical services.
Koenig succeeds David Burke as fire chief, who retired recently after a 37-year career with the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which operates MSP.

The Aurora, which debuted in MSP's Terminal 1 in February, is a 29-foot-high interactive glass and metal artwork that has been capturing travelers' imaginations ever since.
The aerial wave of LEDs encased in hand-blown glass bulbs provides an inspiring light show programmed to change color patterns along with Minnesota’s constantly changing weather. Below the two-level artwork, young and old can join the show, triggering swirling light and color changes as they walk, or dance, on a cluster of reflective glass platforms representing public lakes in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
The Aurora is a commissioned piece by Jen Lewin, an internationally renowned new media and interactive sculptor.
To celebrate this achievement, the Metropolitan Airports Commission and Airport Foundation MSP have just released “Creating The Aurora,” an inspiring documentary video that captures the full journey of the project, from design and construction to installation and activation.
Minnesota and the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is well-known for its arts scene. Galleries abound, public art programs thrive, and every year tens of thousands of artists draw inspiration from the state’s natural beauty and cultural experiences to produce their unique art and music.
Showcasing this local and regional talent is what the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Arts@MSP program does best. With 14 rotating visual arts galleries, 47 commissioned and permanent installations and four performing arts spaces at the airport, the program can showcase multiple artists’ work at the same time and exhibit their work to millions of people from all over the globe.
However, until recently, only people with an airline ticket or airport employees could view them. So, in 2019, the program began uploading descriptions and images of every permanent artwork and every rotating exhibit to its Artwork Archive site, giving anyone with an internet connection the ability to enjoy these pieces. And for its performing arts program, people can enjoy a sample of the music played at the airport by local musicians on Spotify.
To view current and past exhibits, go to this webpage.
You can also view them via a map of the airport here.
Simply enter "arts" or "Arts@MSP" in the map's search box.

Although many face mask requirements have been lifted as more Minnesotans are vaccinated, face masks are still required indoors at MSP Airport.
The continued requirement for everyone to wear face masks inside airports and on aircraft -- regardless of whether they have been vaccinated -- stems from a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulation.
Currently, that federal regulation is set to expire on Sept. 13.
Even with the lessening of restrictions in our communities, we are still in the midst of a global public health crisis. In addition to the federal face covering requirement, the Metropolitan Airports Commission – which operates MSP -- will continue to promote social distancing and other elements of our Travel Confidently program, which includes robust airport cleaning practices, easy access to hand sanitizing stations, and the use of shields in public spaces where airport employees and travelers interact.
MSP staff remain vigilant in following health safety measures and we appreciate your continued support in efforts to keep everyone safe.
You can find additional details about face mask requirements at MSP here.

Wandertest, which offers the popular rapid COVID-19 testing at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), is making the service available on the airport’s pre-security side.
Earlier this month, Wandertest began offering the rapid tests in Terminal 1 on Level 3 of the Gold Ramp.
Wandertest utilizes easy on-line registration to provide access to three test types – Antigen, NAAT, and RT-PCR. Walk-ins are welcome as well. The service delivers test results in under 30 minutes, offered by Homeland Testing Specialists, Inc. The tests cost between $99 and $199 depending on the type you request.
Previously, Wandertest rapid testing was only available to ticketed passengers who had cleared security at Terminal 1. The new site provides convenient access for travelers arriving at MSP and is available to non-travelers as well.
To get to the new Wandertest pre-security site from Terminal 1, follow signs for the Gold Parking Ramp and go to Gold Level 3.
Full information is available at the Wandertest website.

Momentum for air travel continues to build and we want to know what you're thinking as the summer travel season heats up.
MSP Airport is soliciting input from would-be travelers via a survey that gauges attitudes about and interest in air travel. The answers help shape the MSP travel experience as the COVID-19 era begins to wane.
Even if you’ve already taken the survey, please feel free to take it again, as your thoughts and answers may have changed over time.
Survey takers have shown interest in MSP's safety initiatives, such as the increased presence of hand sanitizer dispensers, the face mask requirement and the airport’s efforts to increase physical distancing. All of those efforts are part of the airport's Travel Confidently program.
Thank you for your continued interest in helping us make air travel as safe and comfortable as possible.
