On Monday, July 1, MSP Airport welcomed the first nonstop flights between MSP and Dublin, via Aer Lingus, the national airline of Ireland.
“Air service to Dublin represents a win for both our airport and our regional business partners,” said Brian Ryks, executive director and CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC). “We want to make this relationship with Aer Lingus not only last – but grow into the future.”
Rick King, the newly appointed chair of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and co-chair of the Regional Air Service Partnership, said the business community helped “crystalize the demand” for international travel when it pooled its data to quantify business travelers’ needs.
The Twin Cities is home to 18 Fortune 500 companies and many operate globally. Medtronic recently moved its headquarters to Dublin from Minneapolis and Boston Scientific has significant operations in Ireland. And with Minnesota’s sizable Irish community – about 10 to 12 percent of the total population – leisure travel is important as well.
“This is a good market for us because of the great business environment,” said Bill Byrne, vice president of Global Sales for Aer Lingus. “But it’s also a good market for us because of the strong Irish community here.”
Byrne said travelers won’t be disappointed.
“There’s only one airline that will give you that Irish welcome.”
The MSP-Dublin route marks the third nonstop international route to arrive this year at MSP, following earlier nonstop connections via Delta Air Lines to Seoul, South Korea, and Mexico City.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport received some newfound international attention recently when our concessions program again won accolades.
MSP was named the best overall Airport Food & Beverage Offer for the Americas Region at the 2019 Moodie Davitt Report Airport Food and Beverage (FAB) Awards.
Competition is fierce and broad in this event, which celebrates the best work in the airport food and beverage industry in the last 12 months. This year’s awards were announced at Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport last month. Other regional winners were Dubai, Copenhagen, and Auckland.
"The FAB awards are a unique opportunity to compete on the world stage,” said Liz Grzechowiak, the MAC’s assistant director of concessions and business development. “This is a win for all of our food and beverage concessionaires and our MSP team. We couldn’t be more proud.”
MSP’s concessions program has undergone a sweeping makeover in the last few years, with about 60 new restaurants and shops opened to date and almost 20 more to come.

Now through the end of November, travelers to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) have an opportunity to view a portion of the University of St. Thomas’ American Museum of Asmat Art collection – a collection of exotic wood carvings and stunning textile art from the Papua province of Indonesia. This is the first time the items will be displayed outside the college’s Saint Paul, Minn. campus.
In the exhibit are Asmat ancestor poles and a ceremonial canoe, which had to come through the front doors of Terminal 1 because it was too large to fit through the loading docks. Also on display are 50 more items, including a crocodile sculpture, drums, bags and a ceremonial mat. They represent just a fraction of the 3,000 objects in the collection.
 It may seem odd to see a collection of artwork from a region just south of the equator and nearly 10,000 miles from Minnesota.
But not when you consider that it was a Minnesota-based Catholic bishop (Alphonse Sowada) who played a key role in acquiring this treasured art and led the effort to preserve an art form that serves to communicate between the living and dead in traditional Asmat culture.

The new kiosk is located on Concourse G across from gate G12.

In its World’s Best Awards survey, MSP finished third based on readers’ votes for their favorite airports and other travel experiences. Readers rated airports on access, security check-in, restaurants and bars, shopping and overall design.
Portland International in Oregon was No. 1 and Indianapolis was No. 2. Behind MSP, in positions 4 through 6 were Savannah, Ga., Tampa, Fla. and John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif.
