Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is holding its next job fair May 6 at the Hennepin County Library -- Minneapolis Central (pictured).
Approximately 25 companies – including the Metropolitan Airports Commission -- that operate at MSP will participate in the job fair. A wide range of jobs are available at MSP, including in the food and beverage, retail, hotel, maintenance, airline and aviation fields. Most jobs have highly competitive wages and offer extensive benefits.
The event is being held at the library rather than the airport because of its centralized location and access to public transportation. The Central Library staff also has a team of employees and volunteers who assist patrons with job searches.
“Our second floor is one of the busiest public service points in our bustling, urban library,” said Martha Hardy, a librarian in the Business, Science and Government Documents section of the library. “Community organizations offer one-on-one consultations twice per week and accept appointments for individualized help. And library staff offer individualized job search help on Thursday afternoons in the computer lab.”

 Those consultations cover everything from help drafting resumes and cover letters to basic computer training. In addition, job seekers can take the “Northstar Digital Literacy Assessment” test that measures their proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office (which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Concession openings continue as MSP reinvigorates its restaurant offerings at Terminal 1. The latest additions include a new Hi-Lo Diner (pictured) that opened recently at the end of Concourse F.
The original Hi-Lo is located on East Lake Street in Minneapolis, and the owners are involved with this new location at MSP. Hi-Lo features all-day breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, malts, shakes and a variety of craft cocktails.
 The Concourse C food court recently added a new Smash Burger, which features burgers, sandwiches, to-die-for fries and great shakes. A new Starbucks at that location is also serving up its tasty mocha offerings, and a Chick-fil-A is set to open soon, completing the remodeled food court.
 As the MAC gets ready to mark Earth Day on April 22, we’re celebrating our ongoing efforts to operate sustainably and find opportunities for conservation.
In ways big and small, the MAC works to keep materials out of the waste stream and in recycling centers. During 2018, MSP worked with concession operators and other tenants to capture or re-use hundreds of items.
Highlights of items recycled in 2018 include:
- Co-mingled recycling (paper, cans, bottles and plastics) = 1300 tons
- Baled cardboard = 448 tons
- Pallets = 266 tons (re-used)
- Scrap metal = 103 tons
- Shredded paper = 31 tons
- Organics (composting) = 191 tons
- Used automotive oil = 13 tons
- Used cooking oil = 92 tons
- Batteries = 8 tons
- Paint = 1 ton
- Fluorescent lights = 5 tons
Other sustainable highlights this year include our ongoing commitment to solar energy. Through March of this year, we had generated 11 million kilowatt hours of energy through our solar installations (pictured above) atop parking ramps at MSP.
In recent months, the airport also deployed a new recycling station in the Concourse F food court, which includes a basin for diners to drain liquid from cups and cans before placing cups in the trash and cans or bottles in recycling bins.
Cans with remaining liquid inside are regularly rejected by recycling centers and moved into the waste stream. The new recycling station helps prevent that.
MSP in 2018 also marked its first year of working with Loaves and Fishes and airport concessionaires to send food to those in need.
Loaves and Fishes is a Minneapolis-based non-profit that serves free meals in seven Minnesota counties, including the Twin Cities’ region. Loaves and Fishes picks up ready-to-eat items from airport concessionaires that are nearing their expiration date and would have been discarded. Instead, Loaves and Fishes distributes the food at one of its 54 locations.
The airport donations are collected a couple of times each week, with each load typically amounting to 450-600 pounds of food.
The airport’s restaurants have also stepped up their composting efforts in the last year, collecting food waste in separate bags. Those collections amounted to 191 tons last year.
On Earth Day Monday, MSP staff will surprise and delight travelers with a giveaway of reusable stainless steel straws as a way to reduce plastic waste.
To recognize the spirit of Earth Day beyond April 22, airport guests can also hear the sounds of native Minnesota birds in the baggage claim areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 through April 29
The sounds, broadcast in the public address system on that level, come from the Macaulay Library and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Signs in the baggage claim area will inform passengers that the sounds are recorded, and not coming from birds that found their way indoors.
MSP passengers departing for Seoul, S. Korea on Concourse G earlier this month were treated to an inaugural flight ceremony highlighted by a traditional, Samgo-mu Korean drum dance.
The flight on April 1 marked the start of Delta Air Line’s new daily service between MSP and Seoul.
 Once in Seoul, the daily service connects Delta's MSP hub to more than 80 destinations across Asia through Korean Air. The MSP-to-Seoul flight is offered on a newly upgraded 777-200ER.
The service is Delta's second trans-Pacific nonstop flight from its MSP hub, complementing existing service to Tokyo-Haneda.

Icelandair has operated at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Terminal 2 since 1998. The airline currently offers seasonal service five days a week between MSP and Reykjavik, and those flights will become daily on April 24.

Some may take the efficient snow removal operations at MSP Airport for granted. But those who know what it takes to operate airports – particularly during harsh months like this past February – certainly don’t.
“Thank you all at field maintenance,” wrote one Delta Air Lines operations staff member recently to the MAC Operations/Field Maintenance crew. “It’s been a tough year for all of us, but your teams have stepped up to the challenges.”

 On-time performance
Despite being the fourth snowiest February on record at MSP, 72 percent of MSP flights arrived and departed on time that month, according to the OAG Punctuality League, which tracks on-time performance of the world’s airports and airlines.
That’s below the 81.4 on-time record MSP scored in February 2018, but still a strong showing given that more than twice as much snow fell this February (38.9 inches) compared to the same month last year (15.9 inches).
That underscores the effort that goes into keeping the airport operational during trying weather events and is a contributor to MSP’s high overall on-time record.
MSP had the best on-time record for the full year among major airports globally in 2017, and ranked third in 2018.
‘A tale of two seasons’
Not that this past winter was a cakewalk. Sara Freese, assistant director of MAC Operations/Field Maintenance, gave an overview of winter snow removal efforts to the MAC Board April 1 and described this past winter as “a tale of two seasons.”
Through January, MSP received just 17.6 inches of snow – about average, which provided time for additional training that helped prepare the crew for the deluge that was to come. Then, between Feb. 4 and Feb. 28, MSP received 38.9 inches of snow.
“We were going along well for the first half of the season – then February happened, which was a challenge,” said Freese.
The team put in countless hours of overtime and hired contractors to remove snow piles from runways and deposit them in out-of-the-way in giant snow mounds – one of which was nearly as tall as Terminal 1.
The efficient snow removal operation was appreciated by those who work at the airport every day and who know how snow events can wreak havoc.
“Yesterday, flying in, we had almost no impact from the snow – it was as if it never happened,” wrote one MAC employee to the Operations/Field Maintenance staff. “They (waiting passengers) could tell MSP was doing a phenomenal job and took the delay in stride.”
MSP Airport received high praise for its efforts to welcome visitors and direct them to the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament this past weekend (April 5-9) – and get them home safely and efficiently.
“What a fantastic event – I’ve heard nothing but positive comments,” said Brian Ryks, executive director and CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC). “Thank you for the dedication, the passion – the tremendous effort.”
Ryks spoke at an April 11 meeting of MSP’s Customer Service Action Council to thank everyone who played a role in making the event a success.

A total of 282 private aircraft flew into the MAC’s Reliever Airports on Saturday before the semifinal games, and another 84 flew in Monday for the final game. On Monday, they landed at the St. Paul Downtown Airport with no issues despite the floodwall being deployed to contain the Mississippi River.
On Tuesday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) processed 46,905 passengers departing from MSP – about the same number of passengers who are screened during “a busy spring break day,” explained Phil Burke, assistant director for customer experience at the MAC. Despite the passenger volume, the maximum wait time at security checkpoints was just 16 minutes.
“We didn’t have any lines – it was unbelievable,” said Burke. “Well done TSA. Another good showing.”
He also thanked Ben Owen, director of Arts@MSP, and his team for organizing the more than 130 artists who performed over the weekend to welcome and send off the basketball visitors. This, and the more than 370 volunteers, made a difference.
“Absolutely amazing job by @mspairport this morning,” posted Scott Dupree, executive director of the Greater Raleigh (North Carolina) Sports Alliance, on Twitter on Tuesday. “Best I’ve seen on a day-after Final Four mass exodus. Incredible preparation with over-staffing, signage, and helpful and FRIENDLY volunteers. Very impressive.”
