The uniquely Minnesota holiday from school -- commonly known
as MEA – arrives next week.
To mark one of the most popular travel times of the
year, the Metropolitan Airports Commission and non-profit Airport Foundation
MSP are putting hospitality into high gear, helping to guide you through Minneapolis-St.
Paul International’s terminals, and offering activities to entertain travelers,
including families with children.
On Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 9 a.m., the Heart and Soul Drum Academy will
perform in the North Rotunda at Terminal 1, just inside the North Security
Checkpoint. At the same time, David Olson, a balloon artist, will be
entertaining travelers on the south end of the Airport Mall.
 Another highlight next week will involve the Minnesota Zoo, as zoo staff bring some wildlife to MSP on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The temporary “zoo” will be located next to Stone Arch, at the confluence of Concourses F and G at Terminal 1.
At the help desks in the airport terminals, you will also find souvenir buttons. Family travel guides will be at the help desks and near directories around the terminals. The guides provide information about airport play areas for the kids, dining options and other tips for a smooth passage to your departure gate.

MSP sees higher passenger volume around MEA as school is out for two days and more families take vacations.
On Terminal 1’s ticketing level lobby, airport staff will be present at peak travel times with flags to mark the end of lines as passengers queue up at airline ticket counters and security checkpoints.
To give yourself adequate time to get to your gate before boarding begins, please arrive at a security checkpoint two hours ahead of your domestic flight’s departure and three hours ahead for international flights.
 Hundreds of people recently gathered at MSP Airport’s Terminal 2-Humphrey to welcome home U.S. military veterans returning from a day in Washington, D.C.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, 78 veterans of World War II and the Korean War participated in an Honor Flight. For attendees from the Twin Cities region, the day involved an early-morning Sun Country Airlines flight to the nation’s capital, where their visit included tours of monuments.
 The huge crowd celebrated the veterans and their escorts when their return flight arrived at MSP. Honor guards, family members and other active and retired members of the military greeted them with a boisterous, flag-waving welcome.
A bagpipe-and-drums band entertained the crowd, which spanned both levels of Terminal 2’s lobby area.
Honor Flight Twin Cities formed shortly after the 2004 opening of the WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The program offers free flights to veterans to visit war memorials and other D.C. sites.

A new smart phone app is now available to help children with
autism and anyone looking for basic information about Minneapolis-St. Paul
International Airport.
The app, called “Navigate MSP,” provides a range of
accessible and easy-to-use tools and airport details.
Infiniteach, which developed the app, is a tech company
focused on helping make institutions and businesses more accessible to
individuals with disabilities.
The app can help reduce the anxiety sometimes associated
with air travel. Using content that illustrates what to expect as you move
through the airport, the app includes videos to help visualize different areas,
social narratives that can be read or heard, a schedule check-off and games.
Search for “Navigate MSP” in the Apple or Android app stores to find the tool.
The development of the app follows more than five years of a
program called “Navigating
MSP,” which helps families prepare for their vacations by offering free
monthly sessions that include an actual test run through the airport.
