A group of U.S. Marines from North Carolina flew in two Sikorsky CH-53 transport helicopters (one pictured above), which are capable of lifting a tank or other heavy equipment. The helicopters are the largest and heaviest helicopters used by the U.S. military and were a popular draw on the Flying Cloud airfield, with a Marine Corps recruiting booth set up between them.
Air rides were available for purchase, and a dinner and symposium were held Saturday.
The symposium also featured an appearance by Story Musgrave, an astronaut who has flown the Space Shuttle and hundreds of other aircraft.
Aviation Day at Lake Elmo Airport will be held Sunday, Aug. 13, featuring a fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast at Valter’s Aviation.
The event is put on by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 54.
The menu for the pancake breakfast includes a number of locally sourced items. Sturdiwheat Pancakes from Red Wing, breakfast sausage from Stillwater’s own Brine’s Meat Market and scrambled eggs will be served.
Locally produced maple syrup will also be available.
Proceeds from the event are used to fund youth scholarships to EAA’s Air Academy at Oshkosh, Wis.
