Letter from the Chair

Fellow ERG members,

So much to talk about after the legislative session ended, where to start!

Paid Family and Medical Leave

With the governor’s signature, Minnesota’s new legislation will guarantee paid family and medical leave to nearly all workers, starting in 2026. Minnesota’s law will guarantee workers in the state the right to paid family and medical leave when they cannot work due to serious health or caregiving needs.

Department of Children, Youth, and Families

A new state agency, Department of Children, Youth, and Families, will provide focused leadership in our executive branch and with the Legislature. In addition, this will move us closer to ensuring every child has a safe place to call home, no child goes hungry, and youth have the resources and supports to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. This new agency will bring together holistic supports for families, including core programs from early childhood and education through youth.

Juneteenth is a State-recognized holiday

A bill to establish Juneteenth as a state-recognized holiday, HF 48 (Rep. Ruth Richardson, DFL-Mendota Heights/Sen. Bobby Champion, DFL-Minneapolis), was passed off the Senate floor on Jan. 26 with a vote of 57-8. On Feb. 2, it was passed by the House by a vote of 126-1. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz.

No-Knock Search Warrants

At the end of the legislative session in May, lawmakers passed a robust public safety budget package that also featured dozens of policy provisions, including a new measure that imposes new restrictions on no-knock search warrants.

As of July 1, except in situations where a person inside a home is threatening death or harm to either the officers or to other people inside the residence, a court cannot approve a no-knock search warrant. Officers must also loudly announce themselves as they enter the premises.

It will be an exciting time as a State employee, seeing how these, and other new legislation, transforms our communities in Minnesota.
