 State Leader Spotlight
Johnnie Burns, Statewide Director of EEO, Diversity & Inclusion and
ADA
Johnnie began his new role in
February, after having spent 24 years in civil rights, small business,
compliance and diversity programming (spanning 3 states and 6 government
agencies). In his current role, he is responsible for directing and managing
the State of Minnesota Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, ADA,
and Veterans hiring for the executive branch state agencies and MnSCU.
A message from
Johnnie:
I am excited about being directly involved in the diversification of the state
government. My entire career has been focused on civil rights, inclusion,
and small businesses. Having an administration that believes in these areas and
is putting resources towards them is extremely exciting. I am a
former high school dropout and Job Corps student who went beyond expectations. I came to Minnesota in 1989
and eventually earned my Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration. I learned about diversity while dealing with adversity.

Governor
Dayton’s Diversity and Inclusion Report
Governor
Dayton established the Diversity and Inclusion Council by Executive Order 15-02
in January 2015. The council recently released the 2016 Diversity and Inclusion Report updating policymakers
and Minnesotans on efforts to improve diversity in the state’s
workforce and business supplier chain, and to more equitably engage
diverse people, communities, and businesses in the work of state
government.
Board of Peace
Officer Standards and Training Seeking Board Members
The
Office of Governor Dayton is currently accepting applications for four vacancies on the
Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
“The
board responsible for establishing standards and training protocols for
Minnesota’s police officers must better-reflect the diversity of our communities,”
said Governor Dayton. “For that reason, I have instructed my
staff to actively seek out a more diverse set of candidates for the vacancies
on this Board. I encourage all Minnesotans, who have a desire to serve on this
Board, and who meet the specific eligibility requirements established by the
legislature, to submit their applications prior to the April 13 deadline.”
To apply,
please submit an application, cover letter, and resume through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. The
deadline to apply and receive full consideration is April 13, 2016. For
inquiries concerning the application process, please contact Andrew Olson,
Director of Appointments, at andrew.c.olson@state.mn.us.
