A message from Mayor Wiersum

Minnetonka residents:

I hope you are doing well as late summer draws near.

On July 1, the Minnesota state of emergency ended following a special-session agreement between legislators and the governor. The Minnesota COVID-19 state of emergency is over. And by resolution, the City of Minnetonka’s COVID-19 state of emergency ends tomorrow, Saturday, July 31 – 30 days following the end of the statewide state of emergency.

My sincere desire is that the COVID-19 pandemic is over as well. I want that to be true, but it is not. The pandemic is still with us, and the more contagious Delta variant threatens to upend the pandemic progress the end of the state of emergency signifies.

The Delta variant is a game changer, in a significant and dangerous way. COVID-19 infections are increasing, and breakthrough infections among fully vaccinated people have been reported. Overwhelmingly, the rise in infections and serious illness is among unvaccinated people. See the latest Hennepin County COVID-19 statistics. The situation is concerning. No one wants to turn the dial back to where it was during the state of emergency. My hope is that responsible, considerate behavior by all of us can turn the tide.

My big ask is this ... if you have not yet done so, please, please, please get vaccinated. The shots are readily available. COVID-19 vaccinations are literally life savers. Vaccination is the kindest action you can take for yourself, your family and your friends and neighbors.

Minnetonka’s emergency management team continues to track this pandemic. The city is in daily contact with state and county public health experts. We know this is a dynamic situation that will require adjustments. As you go about your daily routines please consider what steps you can take, including wearing masks, in areas where social distancing is a challenge.

The Minnetonka state of emergency ends tomorrow, but the pandemic is not over. If we each take action to protect ourselves and one another, we can avoid another state of emergency that restricts both our behavior and our personal freedoms.

Please be safe, be kind and be well. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

sig
