Growing in All Seasons

Booths 28-30

Stop by and visit Mau Family Produce, another original market vendor, for tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, kohlrabi and more. John and Anna start their growing season indoors at their Maple Grove farm in February and then transplant their plants outdoors when Minnesota spring permits. Starting indoors allows them to have a longer growing season, which means you’ll see winter squash, pumpkins and ornamental gourds later this fall.

Stop by for some hot pepper jam as well!

Locally Sourced

Booths 17-18

New to the market this year, the Werner family from French Lake Butcher Shop in South Haven will be onsite every other week for the remainder of the season providing pork, beef and lamb.

Recipe of the Week

Kohlrabi and Turnip Slaw

Reprinted from Martha Stewart

Ingredients

  • 1 pound kohlrabi (about 2 small heads, leaves included)
  • 1 medium turnip (about 8 oz.), peeled and quartered
  • 3 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 tbsp. peanut oil
  • 2 tsp. honey
  • 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced

Directions

  1. Separate stems from kohlrabi bulb, trim, and discard tough bottoms of stems. Halve leaves lengthwise then thinly shred crosswise. Trim root end from bulb and peel away tough outer layer; halve lengthwise.
  2. Fit a food processor with a shredding blade (or use a box grater) and shred kohlrabi bulb and turnip.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together lime juice, peanut oil, honey, and sesame oil; season with salt and pepper. Add scallions, kohlrabi leaves and bulb, and turnip to bowl; toss to coat. Let stand at least 15 minutes.
