community partners were present to share ideas as well as to create new
partnerships.
Among the presenters were Dr. Dan Halvorsen of the
University of MN, Dr. Adam Rees, President of Essentia Health Central Region,
and local recipients of SHIP funds. Congrats on this great success!

Dear Colleagues, we are pleased to announce that the
Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH’s) Office of Statewide Health Improvement
Initiatives (OSHII) and the Health Promotion and the Chronic Disease Division
(HPCD) are jointly planning to host a regular training series for MDH and Local
Public Health staff focused on honing public health skills. The trainings will
be broadcast via WebEx from MDH’s Golden Rule Building.
The purpose of this
evidenced-based public health training series is to build staff and
organizational capacity to use proven and field-tested approaches to more
efficiently and successfully plan, design, implement, communicate and evaluate
public health initiatives. Many of the future trainings will be based upon
material and content developed by national experts at the Prevention Resource
Center at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri.
Upcoming Session: The first offering in this series
is a session on Communicating to Policy Makers on Friday, Jan 30,
1- 2:30pm (mark your calendars!). More information will follow as the date for
that session draws near.
Survey Request: The planning team seeks your input
and feedback in building a training series that will meet your interests and
needs. This survey link is a set of set of initial course topics being
considered. Please provide your feedback on the suggested topics by
completing the following brief survey by Friday, Jan 23.

This two part webinar series will
introduce participants to IATP's high school level Farm to School Youth
Leadership Curriculum. The curriculum is designed to empower youth, teach them
about their local food system, engage them in meaningful, hands-on learning
activities that also strengthen their school’s Farm to School program and link
them directly to farmers in their community. Implementation of the curriculum
in a high school setting simultaneously gives students ownership and commitment
to their school’s Farm to School program, while reducing the amount of legwork
and research required of teachers or food service staff to establish or expand
a Farm to School initiative.
Part 1: Helping students
understand their food systems February 9, 3:30 pm Register now for Part 1
Part 2: Strengthening Farm
to School February 17, 3:30 pm Register now for Part 2
‘How Communities Are Paying to Maintain Trails, Bike
Lanes, and Sidewalks’ addresses both the technical and
political challenges. It examines agency maintenance policies and procedures
for bike/ped maintenance, and it provides several examples of communities
who’ve successfully made these facilities a sufficient priority to overcome the
challenge of paying for maintenance. There are examples related to sidewalks,
trails, and protected bikeways.

Beginning January 1, 2015, administrative responsibility for the
Call it Quits Referral Program moved to the Minnesota Department of Health.
This change is funded through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
The Call it Quits Referral Program is a way providers can easily
refer patients to existing Minnesota tobacco quitline services via a single fax
form. It is supported by a collaboration of Minnesota’s major health plans
(Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, HealthPartners, Medica, PreferredOne
and UCare) and ClearWay Minnesota (operator of the QUITPLAN®
Helpline, serving uninsured and underinsured people who live in
Minnesota). The goal is to make it easier for providers to connect their patients
to existing tobacco quitline services.
Learn more about the
Call it Quits Referral Program at www.health.mn.gov/callitquits.
This webinar is sponsored by The

While youth cigarette smoking continues to
decline, electronic cigarette use among high school students tripled from 2011
to 2013 and there has been no progress in reducing youth cigar smoking. Read more here.
Noticing tobacco point-of-sale displays more
often and recognizing a higher number of tobacco brands is associated with an
increased risk of becoming susceptible to smoking among adolescents in the
United Kingdom, and recognizing a higher number of brands is positively
associated with an increased risk of smoking uptake. You can find the abstract here.
Smoking prevention efforts and messaging
campaigns that include partnerships with religious communities may require
consideration of these racial/ethnic differences when planning prevention
strategies. Click here to view abstract.

New
Proposed Science-Based Meal Patterns for the Child and Adult Care Food Program
from USDA: On
Jan 9, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a proposed rule
with new science-based nutrition standards for meals provided through USDA’s
Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The proposed meal patterns will help
ensure that the 3+ million children, as well as the older adults and adults in
nonresidential daycare settings, who receive meals regulated by the CACFP each
day have access to healthy, balanced meals and snacks.
Those interested in reviewing the proposal and offering comments during the
90 day period are encouraged to do so once it is published at www.regulations.gov, a Web-based portal
to make it easy for citizens to participate in the federal rulemaking process.
All comments received will be considered carefully in finalizing the rule
before it is implemented.
Please review the proposed rule here and consider submitting comments.
