Updated tool to introduce food package changes
Do you want some assistance in talking about the food package changes with participants? Check out the updated New Options – WIC Food Package document. A section on the Infant food package has been added on the back of the page. This document highlights main food package changes to make it easier for participants to choose the options they want. Measles information
- Measles is a growing concern in the U.S., with cases rising from 2,285 last year (including 3 deaths) to 1,575 cases so far this year. There is also a large ongoing outbreak in Mexico, with nearly 10,000 cases and at least 28 deaths. In Minnesota, there have been 15 cases this year, along with regional activity in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
- Measles is highly contagious and serious—about 20% of cases require hospitalization. Symptoms begin with cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by fever and a rash. People are infectious for about nine days, and unvaccinated individuals exposed to measles must stay home for 21 days.
- The best protection is the MMR vaccine, given at 12–15 months and again at 4–6 years. If vaccination status is unknown, it is safe to give a dose. There are no vaccine requirements for most travelers entering the U.S., though refugees do have requirements. While many people from Mexico and Central America are vaccinated, coverage has declined, leaving some communities at risk.
