When we protect ONE, we help protect ALL
The One Health approach recognizes that the health of people, animals, and the environment are deeply interconnected. One Health Day is a global campaign that celebrates and brings attention to the need for the One Health approach to address shared health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. The One Health approach can address a wide range of public health concerns like antimicrobial resistance, food safety, infectious diseases, and much more.
One Health Day provides an opportunity for experts and the community to join together in One Health education and awareness. Working together allows us to have the biggest impact on improving health for people, animals, plants, and our shared environment.
Here in Minnesota, we take a One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance and stewardship because antibiotic-resistant bacteria can spread between humans, animals, and the environment, making it a shared problem that no single sector can solve alone. Antibiotics are used in health care, veterinary medicine, and agriculture, and when misused or overused in any of these areas, they contribute to the development and spread of resistance. Resistant bacteria can travel through food, water, soil, and direct contact, crossing species and borders. By bringing together human, animal, and environmental health professionals, the One Health approach promotes responsible antibiotic use and coordinated actions to slow resistance and protect the effectiveness of these life-saving medicines for everyone.
You can celebrate One Health Day every day by committing to working with experts in other sectors to achieve better health outcomes for all. One Health in action
The Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative (MOHASC) is a great example of One Health in action right here in Minnesota! MOHASC is made up of leaders in human, animal, and environmental health who work together to promote judicious antibiotic use and stewardship and to reduce the impact of antibiotic-resistant pathogens across the One Health spectrum. If you’re not already a member and are interested in being a part of these efforts, complete this brief membership information form indicating your interests: MOHASC Partner Information Form. There are exciting things happening, and we hope you’ll join us!
