Healthy eating in the workplace – Implementing a healthy snack station

Most employees spend at least eight hours a day at work, which means they may consume at least one meal and two snacks at the workplace. Employees may have many options to choose from at work like cafeterias, vending, and nearby options. Others may have very few options available at the workplace or in the surrounding area.

A healthy snack station is a great a great way to provide healthier options at work. Learn about creating a healthy snack station here.

Why employees work while sick, and how to stop it

In an Harvard Business Review article, concern over presenteeism, or coming to work while sick, is a challenge for employers. It can lead to poor work performance, impact productivity, and increase the spread of illness, which can increase absenteeism.

In a 2023 survey, it was estimated that 90% of US employees worked while sick in that past year, and 40% hesitated to use their sick leave, citing the need for their work to continue. The article details three organizational drivers that contributed to presenteeism and provides structural and cultural strategies to determine where work demands can be re-balanced. Training managers to identify employee stress and presenteeism can help, and building feedback mechanisms to monitor workloads, flexibility, and encourage use of sick time when needed.

Paid sick time for Minnesota workers

Under Minnesota’s Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) law, employees receive paid time off to care for themselves and their loved ones from their employer.

Whether you're feeling ill, attending a medical appointment, supporting a sick family member, or facing challenges like domestic violence or stalking, ESST helps ensure you don’t have to sacrifice your health for a paycheck. This protection applies to both full-time and part-time workers across the state, reinforcing job security and personal well-being.

Learn more by visiting the Department of Labor and Industry’s ESST page.
