COVID-19 vaccine update

On August 27, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved COVID-19 vaccines for the 2025-2026 season manufactured by Moderna, Pfizer, and Sanofi/Novavax. In addition, the FDA revoked the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, adjuvanted; Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Due to the revocation of EUAs, 2024-2025 COVID-19 products should no longer be administered effective immediately. UUAV providers should:

  • Remove the 2024-2025 vaccines from their storage units.
  • Label them “do not use”.
  • Report them as nonviable in MIIC, even if they are not expired.

This applies to all presentations of 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines, including products for ages 6 months–11 years of age and 12 years of age and older.

We will make 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines available through the UUAV program when it is on the federal contract after the upcoming ACIP meeting Sept. 18-19. Keep an eye out for more information from us after that meeting regarding ordering.

UUAV flu shipping soon

We are happy to announce that UUAV 2025-26 flu vaccine will begin shipping to providers next week. We will continue to ship flu vaccine orders as doses become available from the manufacturers throughout the coming months. To make sure all providers have flu vaccine early in the season, and because different brands and presentations become available at different times, you may not receive all your doses in one shipment. Sites can expect to receive a few small shipments throughout the distribution season. You will receive a confirmation email when we process your order. Please be ready to receive vaccine at your clinic one to two days after receiving the confirmation email. Get ready for flu season

  1. Providers should begin vaccinating priority patients as soon as they have vaccine.
  2. Children 6 months through 8 years of age who have received fewer than two influenza vaccine doses before July 1, 2024, separated by at least four weeks apart or vaccination history is unknown.
    • Pregnant people in their third trimester.

Watch for additional communications from MDH as more information becomes available from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  1. To ensure adequate supply for larger-scale influenza vaccination clinics (e.g., walk-up or drive-thru clinics), consider scheduling them for late October to early November.
  2. Provide Vaccine Information Statements to patients. Provide the appropriate VIS: Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (Inactivated or Recombinant) 1/31/2025 or Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (Live, Intranasal) 1/31/2025.
  3. Read the 2025-26 Minnesota Fall Flu Guide when it is posted online. Get an email alert when the flu guide and other flu materials are updated by subscribing to the MDH Influenza Information for Health Professionals. Type in your email address at the bottom of the page and click on “submit.”
  4. Check the status of your flu orders in MIIC under “manage special vaccine event.” As flu vaccine doses become available from the manufacturers, MDH staff will process your flu prebook vaccine orders in MIIC. Sites can check the status and details of their flu vaccine requests in MIIC throughout the distribution season. More information about viewing special event vaccine requests in MIIC is available at Special Event Vaccine Request (PDF).
