Oluwaseun Akinyede, DVM, MPH

Oluwaseun Akinyede, DVM, MPH is a veterinary public health professional with experience in epidemiology, disease surveillance, and evidence-based research. She recently completed a residency in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Her background includes laboratory research on animal viruses, pandemic preparedness and response, and systematic literature reviews to inform policies and clinical guidelines.

Passionate about One Health, she has a strong interest in preventing and controlling antimicrobial resistance, transboundary animal diseases, and zoonotic diseases. She is also enthusiastic about exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to address complex One Health challenges.

Dr. Akinyede's recent publication in the American Journal of Veterinary Research provides preliminary exploration of the potential for generative AI to provide culturally tailored, multilingual antimicrobial resistance awareness messaging. Specifically, this study assessed ChatGPT-4's capability for crafting culturally and linguistically suited AMR awareness messages.

Prompts were used to create AMR awareness content in six different languages using behavior change models. The content was then rated for accuracy, applicability, language, cultural fit, originality, clarity, persuasiveness, and overall quality. Quality ranged from poor to excellent and performance varied across languages. While generative AI demonstrated the potential to generate AMR awareness content, the varied quality still required professional verification. More research is needed to explore generative AI for One Health messaging.

MOHASC Updates

MOHASC Annual Mtg Group Photo

2025 MOHASC Annual Meeting was a success!

On Feb. 5, MOHASC members gathered in-person for our Annual Meeting at the Minnesota Humanities Center in St. Paul. As our keystone event each year, the meeting not only provides an important opportunity for intersectoral networking and discussion about antibiotic use and stewardship, but it also allows members to learn about current stewardship challenges and progress across the One Health spectrum while identifying Collaborative priorities and objectives for the upcoming year and beyond. The meeting included a keynote speaker, presentations from MOHASC members about their current work and discoveries, and working group sessions to discuss strategic objectives and next steps for the future.

MOHASC's diverse membership continues to grow with over 170 members representing more than 60 organizations spanning human, animal, and environmental health across the state of Minnesota and beyond. Together, we are raising awareness of the significant impact antibiotic resistance has on the health of our world and working to ensure that infections can be treated effectively for generations to come.

One Health in Action

Wastewater lab tour

MOHASC has hit the ground running in 2025! Each year, the Collaborative hosts One Health events, both in person and virtually, to provide members with perspectives, education, and resources on antimicrobial resistance and stewardship from across human, animal, and environmental health.

2025 MOHASC One Health events have included a tour of the Minnesota Department of Health Public Health Laboratory, a tour of the Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant Laboratory, and a webinar featuring MOHASC member Joanna Klein, PhD, assistant professor of biology at the University of St. Thomas, who discussed her undergraduate students' research monitoring the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in the environment and bioprospecting for antimicrobials.

We have more exciting events planned for the coming year and we hope you'll join us! If you’re not already a member and are interested in being a part of these efforts, complete the brief MOHASC Partner Information Form indicating your interests.

U.S. Releases First National One Health Framework

The federal government has released its first national One Health plan to protect from shared health threats.

The first ever 2025-2029 National One Health Framework to Address Zoonotic Diseases and Advance Public Health Preparedness in the United States (NOHF - Zoonoses) (PDF) includes a common vision, mission, and goals for key federal partners involved in implementing the One Health approach to protect people, animals, and our shared environment from zoonotic diseases and other One Health threats.

The plan will guide collaborative efforts across the United States government for the next five years, helping federal agencies work together to prevent and control zoonotic diseases and prepare for future health threats, protecting health for all.

Effects of microplastic concentration, composition, and size on Escherichia coli biofilm-associated antimicrobial resistance

Neila Gross, Johnathan Muhvich, Carly Ching, Bridget Gomez, Evan Horvath, Yanina Nahum, Muhammad H. Zaman

A new study by researchers at Boston University indicates the presence of microplastics in the environment may facilitate antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The study adds a new layer to concerns about the role that microplastics, which are ubiquitous in the environment, play in promoting the emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacteria.

While previous studies have shown how microplastics can serve as vehicles on which bacterial communities can form and share resistance genes, this study suggests there's an interaction occurring between the microplastics and bacteria that influences the development of AMR and that microplastics may actively drive the development of resistance.

C) 9 years

The MOHASC Annual Meeting has taken place for 9 consecutive years since our founding in 2016.

Minnesota's long-standing and unique One Health approach of providing a collaborative environment to promote judicious antibiotic use and antibiotic stewardship was the first of its kind in the country and has served as a model for other jurisdictions to build similar programs. MOHASC continues to grow both our membership and our reach as we work together to reduce the impact of antibiotic-resistant pathogens on human, animal, and environmental health.
