Holiday greetings to each of you! 2024 is coming to a close and it's been quite the year for the Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative (MOHASC)! From our Minnesota State Fair Booth, to our re-launched Library Display Program, and our annual commemoration of U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, the members of MOHASC have continued to make a positive impact on antibiotic resistance and stewardship across the state of Minnesota and beyond. We're looking forward to all that will be accomplished in 2025! We'll be starting the year off right with our 9th consecutive MOHASC Annual Meeting. Details are provided below and we hope to see you there!

MOHASC is made up of leaders in human, animal, and environmental health who work together to promote judicious antibiotic use and stewardship and to reduce the impact of antibiotic-resistant pathogens across the One Health spectrum. If you’re not already a member and are interested in being a part of these efforts, complete this brief membership information form indicating your interests: MOHASC Partner Information Form. There are exciting things happening, and we hope you’ll join us!

Partner Spotlight

Emma Leof Bollig, MPH

Program Manager and Lead Epidemiologist, University of Minnesota

Emma Bollig is the program manager and lead epidemiologist for the Companion Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (CAVSNET) and the Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Initiative (ARSI) at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a master’s in public health (MPH) in epidemiology and a bachelor of arts degree in physiology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Emma has conducted local and national antibiotic use studies, which include:

  • Developing data collection instruments (surveys and analytic databases for internal and external collaborators to enter data)
  • Developing and communicating standardized study protocols to participating researchers
  • Hosting in-person and virtual trainings
  • Maintaining and updating databases to monitor and ensure data integrity and quality
  • Analyzing large datasets
Emma

Emma helped co-found CAVSNET, an automatic, passive disease surveillance system using electronic medical records from three different providers. CAVSNET has more than 50 million records from over 1,400 companion animal practices across the United States. She has helped develop resources for antimicrobial stewardship in both human and veterinary medicine, most notably a comprehensive handbook for veterinary clinics to implement the AVMA Core Principles of Antimicrobial Stewardship.

She also collaborates with other veterinary schools to host in-person workshops to further antimicrobial stewardship in three focus areas: hospital stewardship policies, veterinary curriculum, and cross-institutional research.

Emma has been a member of the Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative since 2016. One of her favorite parts of her job is working with a passionate group of people that is motivated to combat antimicrobial resistance across animal, human, and environmental health.

U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week was a success!

USAAW

U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW) was Nov. 18 to 22. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) coordinated several activities including a proclamation by the Governor, daily newsletters, a social media campaign, and lighting up Minnesota landmarks in purple down the I-35 corridor and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

MOHASC members also coordinated numerous activities at their own organizations including hosting booths, trivia games, a summit with educational topics, a meme contest, participation in an institutional poster symposium, and distributing patient information on antibiotic use and stewardship.

It was a very successful week. Thanks to all who contributed!

Report: Antibiotic stewardship within U.S. poultry production shows decline in antibiotic use in chickens and turkeys

An updated report from the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association highlights the significant decline in antibiotic use in the poultry industry over the past several years. Under the research direction of Dr. Randall Singer, DVM, PhD, of Mindwalk Consulting Group, LLC, this report represents an 11-year set of data collected from 2013 to 2023 for U.S. broiler chickens and turkeys and represents an eight-year set of data collected from 2016 to 2023 for layers. A prior report, covering 2013-2022, was released in December 2023. The updated report was prepared through a systematic collection of on-farm antibiotic use data to capture the disease indications and routes of administration through which antibiotics were given to the poultry.

Current Research

Prophylactic antibiotic use is common in dogs and
cats presenting for procedures at veterinary referral dental practices

Allison C. Volk, Stephanie L. Goldschmidt, Emma R. Bollig, Jennifer A. Montebello, and Jennifer L. Granick

Objective

Antimicrobial stewardship is critical for the prevention of antimicrobial resistance. A lack of prescribing guidelines makes overprescribing in veterinary dentistry likely and represents an opportunity for improvement of stewardship practices. This study described prescribing practices of residency-trained and board-certified veterinary dentists for dogs and cats undergoing dental procedures.

Methods

Antibiotic-use data were collected from the first 10 patients presenting for a dental procedure at each of 22 participating clinics beginning on Oct. 2, 2023.

Results

35% of patients undergoing procedures received 1 or more systemically administered antibiotic, most commonly amoxicillin–clavulanic acid, ampicillin-sulbactam, and clindamycin. Half (43 of 85 [50.6%]) of prescriptions for dogs were for perioperative or postoperative prophylaxis. For dogs, antibiotic duration for prophylactic versus treatment purposes was not significantly different. Common conditions included periodontal disease, tooth fractures, and oral masses. Comorbid conditions were present in 22.3% (49 of 220) of patients. Presence of comorbid conditions was not a risk factor for antibiotic prescribing. Tooth extractions were a risk factor for antibiotic prescribing among patients with periodontal disease, and those with ≥ 11 extractions were more likely to receive antibiotics than those with < 5.

Conclusions

This study characterized antibiotic use among canine and feline dental procedures performed by residency-trained and board-certified veterinary dentists and identified tooth extractions as a risk factor for antibiotic prescribing.

Clinical relevance

The results obtained from this study provide insight into prescribing practices in a referral setting and impetus to develop outcomes-based studies to determine the need for prophylactic antibiotics during specific procedures, especially tooth extractions.
