Cancer Risk Factor Dashboard Offered

The Minnesota Cancer Reporting System (MCRS) at MDH plays a crucial role in monitoring trends and occurrences of cancer in Minnesota residents. MCRS has developed an interactive risk factor dashboard to illustrate the potential impact of cancers in Minnesota that have been associated with specific modifiable risk factors, such as alcohol, commercial tobacco use, physical activity, and more. This dashboard does not account for all of the things that also can play a role in someone’s risk of developing cancer such as the places people live, work, or play or the systems that shape the conditions of their daily lives.

Data are available by county, race and ethnicity and age for 2017-2021. The tool can be used to support program planning, decision making, and resource allocation.

For more data on cancer in Minnesota, visit MCRS Cancer Statistics and Reports.

SHIP Toolkit: Coaching As Powerful Leadership

Expert tips and practical tools lead to strategic, lasting change

By Traci Warnberg-Lemm

Coaching is a powerful leadership tool that moves beyond traditional management approaches. Unlike simply directing tasks or providing solutions, coaching empowers team members to take ownership of their work, make decisions, and achieve better outcomes. Coaching tools and skills can transform how we lead, help to streamline strategic action, increase team accountability, and produce results with less stress.

Coaching skills can:

  • Clarify Priorities that Drive Impact: Coaching questions can help leaders set clear, actionable goals and guide their teams in focusing on the tasks that have the greatest impact. This prevents distractions and ensures that efforts align with broader public health strategies for sustainable results.
  • Encourage Creative Problem-Solving: Coaching opens the door for innovative thinking by empowering team members to explore new solutions. Leaders ask thought-provoking questions that prompt critical thinking and creativity, driving forward-thinking public health strategies.
  • Build Resilience and Adaptability: Coaching develops team resilience by encouraging flexibility and reflection. Leaders help their teams adjust to challenges and navigate change, creating a more adaptable and responsive work environment.
  • Promote Accountability Without Micromanaging: Coaching cultivates a culture of accountability, empowering team members to take ownership of their tasks. Leaders with coaching skills can guide others to set their own benchmarks and follow through, build trust and empower others to act with greater autonomy, reducing the day-to-day burden on leadership.

Incorporating coaching skills into your leadership toolkit can revolutionize how you manage your team, leading to more clear and focused efforts, increased accountability, and ultimately, better health outcomes for the communities you serve.
