New cultural toolkits
Two new cultural toolkits have been added to the WIC Cultural Toolkit webpage. An American Indian and Afghan Culture and Food Toolkit are now available. These individual toolkits were written by Nutrition graduate students, Sara Wells and Atika Bashari, in partnership with MDH WIC staff.
We are also compiling a list of cultural resources on the Cultural Resources webpage that may serve to connect WIC participants and provide resources for staff to continue your growth in cultural humility. This list may continue to grow, please share additional statewide resources that would be good additions to health.wic@state.mn.us.
We aim to make the Cultural Toolkit a relevant and expanding resource. If you would like to provide feedback on what additional toolkits we should develop, please complete the survey Toolkits for Local Agencies by November 15 if you haven’t already. New toolkits are developed as time and resources allow.

Mental health training resources
Last Thursday was World Mental Health Day. We wanted to take some time to recognize that all of us in the WIC world deal with challenges within the context of our work. We have good days’ worth celebrating and bad days’ worth acknowledging. One thing we know is that at WIC, we are not alone. We walk through each day with our co-workers and friends, and we can take the time to practice self-reflection and space to heal.
Below are a few trainings you may find helpful as you navigate the more challenging days and help you to be more resilient in the moments that count.
Available on the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Learning Center:
- Prerecorded Weaving the Understanding of ACEs, Historical Trauma and Resilience for Healing in Indigenous Communities and Beyond
- This presentation discusses how unresolved historical, ancestral, and childhood trauma show up in everything from personal mental and physical health issues to family and larger societal challenges. It also dives into how understanding what these traumas are and how to work with them promote healing and wellbeing are essential to stopping patterns, building resilience, and changing the trajectory of our individual and collective futures. Included are some breathing practices!
Available Training for Staff Development on our Continuing Education webpage:
- The Adultitis Intervention Video Series
- A remarkable tool for WIC staff looking to beat burnout, become more creative/innovative, and develop resiliency in the midst of change. They may be used at any staff meeting or group event. Because they are short, they are a perfect way to start or wrap-up a meeting.
Take some time to check out one or a few of these videos this month!
Local agency staff should talk to their supervisor for approval before registering for training.
