For our clinical audience:
Minnesota allows minors (under 18 years) to consent to certain types of care without parent or guardian permission. Test your knowledge with the questions below. Answers found at the bottom of the newsletter.
1. Aspen is a 16-year-old patient you are seeing for a well child check-up. They marked their gender identify as non-binary on their intake sheet. During the check-up, Aspen mentions that their home situation is difficult, and their parents are unsupportive. They want to speak with a therapist and would like a referral to a LGBTQIA+ friendly therapist. However, they don’t want their parent to find out. Is Aspen able to consent to outpatient counseling without parent permission?
- Yes
- No

2. 15-year-old Mia has been coming to your clinic for 10 years. She recently gave birth and is parenting a 3-month-old baby. Mia is in your office today for her own asthma care. What best describes Mia’s rights as a patient and mother?
- Mia is able to consent for her infant’s care, but Mia’s parent must consent for her care.
- Mia is able to consent to both her care and her infant child’s care.
- Mia’s parent must consent to both Mia’s and Mia’s infant’s care.
