MDH supports unprecedented amount of overdose prevention work across Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has awarded more than 65 overdose prevention grants and contracts to the 11 Tribal nations who share borders within Minnesota, community-based organizations, health systems and harm reduction organizations across the state following receipt of historic investment in drug overdose prevention through the State Legislature’s passing of the Comprehensive Drug Overdose and Morbidity Prevention Act (COMPA) (Minnesota Statute 144.0528) in 2023. The agency received $24 million for this ongoing work.
The funding has allowed MDH to support a variety of programs, communities, and initiatives with the aim of meeting people where they are in their recovery journey to prevent overdoses.

2023 preliminary overdose data county-level tables are now available
County-level tables have information about Minnesota residents who died from drug overdose between 2014 and 2023. They list the number of deaths by year, resident county, and the type of drug involved. This drug overdose death data is useful for understanding and helping improve the drug overdose crisis response in Minnesota. Local public health agencies, county organizations, and community partners can use this information to find patterns, distribute funds and materials, and create specific plans to address drug overdose impacts in their communities.
Please visit the Opioid Dashboard for statewide information on opioid overdose death, nonfatal overdose, use, misuse, substance use disorder, prescribing practices, supply, diversion, harm reduction, co-occurring conditions, and social determinants of health.
The monthly fatal overdose snapshot provides a look at the prior month's overdose death data. This snapshot was created by MDH and is close to real time data.
Each monthly snapshot highlights the following measures:
- Suspected overdose deaths compared to the same month for the prior year.
- Last 24 months of confirmed and updated provisional overdose deaths in Minnesota.
- Suspected overdose deaths compared to the previous year for the relevant time period.
