The Minnesota Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health (MN COE) is dedicated to developing tools to support health care providers, public health professionals, and resettlement partners in their efforts to better serve immigrant and refugee families. We build on existing infrastructure and partners’ extensive experience to identify and monitor newcomer health issues and needs, contribute to evidence-based policies and guidance, and ultimately improve continuity of care and health outcomes for newcomers.

World Refugee Day 2024 recap

Thank you for all you do!

Thank you to everyone who participated in a World Refugee Day event either locally, virtually, or with us! We asked you to tell us in a word, why is welcoming newcomers important to you - the top, words were humanity, equity, community, support, and displaced. Thank you to all of our readers, for all that you do to help this special community.

Word cloud: why is welcoming newcomers important - top words: humanity, equity, community, support, displaced

Our partners at the Colorado Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health put together this graphic, highlighting the diversity of newcomers arriving to the U.S. from their data warehouse:

CO COE World Refugee Day 2024: 20 years of data, 99K newcomer arrivals, 87% completed health screening

Our Minnesota Refugee Health Program also collected stories from a couple of our local newcomers as part of our annual World Refugee Day Social Media campaign. Read their stories and insights into health and community: Stories from Minnesota Refugees.

Interpreter Vendor Directory for Rare Languages

The Minnesota Center of Excellence in Newcomer Health is developing an online directory of vendors that offer interpretation services for languages not commonly spoken in the U.S., or "rare languages." The Interpreter Vendor Directory for Rare Languages is intended to be used by community partners, health care providers, and others in need of rare language interpretation services.

As we expand this directory, we want to hear from you! Please fill out the Interpreter Vendor Directory for Rare Languages Form to suggest languages to add to the Interpreter Vendor Directory for Rare Languages and/or to provide information about vendors that offer interpretation services for rare languages. We will share the searchable directory once it goes live!

MN COE publications

Our MN COE partners have recently published an article about providing trauma-informed care and screening in Afghan refugee children. Highlights include an overview of trauma-informed care principles and insights into several screening tools for a variety of situations including stress, emotional disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression.

Our MN COE partners have also published a community case study that describes the State of Minnesota’s cross-sectoral response that addressed the acute medical needs of the Afghan arrivals during Operation Allies Welcome in the fall of 2021.

Did you know that we are one of two centers established by support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention? Visit our partner site: Colorado COE in Newcomer Health!

The Colorado team leads data/epidemiology and public health navigation initiatives through partnerships with states and sites across the country. Their primary goal is to maintain a data repository to identify and respond to the changing landscape of newcomer health, with a focus on domestic medical exams and long-term health follow-up data.

Additionally, they support public health teams in ensuring that all populations are included in public health responses, regardless of culture or language. They develop best practices, toolkit resources, and capacity-building trainings for navigators and public health teams.
