Greetings!

We are thrilled to be re-launching our Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative (MOHASC) newsletter! Each issue will feature current updates, research, resources, and upcoming events and opportunities in antibiotic resistance and stewardship across the One Health spectrum. And back by popular demand, we'll also include a stewardship trivia question to test your knowledge and possibly stir up some friendly competition amongst your colleagues.

MOHASC is made up of leaders in human, animal, and environmental health who work together to promote judicious antibiotic use and stewardship and to reduce the impact of antibiotic-resistant pathogens across the One Health spectrum. If you’re not already a member and are interested in being a part of these efforts, complete this brief MOHASC Partner Information Form indicating your interests. There are exciting things happening and we hope you’ll join us!

MOHASC Annual Meeting Recap

The 8th Annual MOHASC meeting was held Jan. 31, 2024, at the MN Landscape Arboretum in Chaska. Highlights from the day included:

  • A keynote presentation from Dr. Jeff Bender, DVM, MS, DACVPM, University of Minnesota, reflecting on 25 years of antimicrobial resistance and stewardship work and a look into the future.
  • Two rounds of TED-style talks from subject matter experts across the One Health spectrum on current research, resources, and issues of interest in the antibiotic resistance and stewardship space.
  • MOHASC Working Group strategic planning sessions and large-group discussion of focus areas and events for 2024.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped to make the day a success!

Minnesota State Fair Booth: Aug. 22 – Sept. 2

We are hard at working planning our annual MOHASC booth for the 2024 Minnesota State Fair in the EcoExperience Building! This is our largest public outreach event of the year where we interact with >6,000 fair attendees.

This year’s theme is “Superheroes Unite Against Superbugs: Protect your health by using antibiotics only when needed.” Attendees will be able to engage with experts from diverse fields and take action by signing an antibiotic stewardship pledge, testing their knowledge with the question of the day, and proudly displaying a "Superheroes Fight Superbugs" temporary tattoo, symbolizing their commitment to responsible antibiotic use.

Volunteers needed! It takes a lot of great people to make this event a success each year. Please be on the lookout for volunteer recruitment information coming soon.

MOHASC Leadership Opportunity

MOHASC is currently seeking two volunteers to serve as Chair and Vice Chair for our Environmental Stewardship Work Group. Vice Chairs typically go on to chair the Work Group the following year but volunteers can also serve as Co-Chairs.

Responsibilities can be shared between the two volunteers and include:

  • ~4 hours/year: Participate in one-hour quarterly calls for the Chairs and Vice Chairs of all four MOHASC Work Groups (Human, Animal, Environmental, One Health Engagement)
  • ~6 hours/year: With assistance from MOHASC Director, lead one-hour quarterly Environmental Stewardship Work Group calls, develop agendas, take and distribute notes, coordinate activities, etc.
  • Minimal: Intermittent communication with MOHASC Director, Work Group Chairs, and Work Group members, as needed

If you’re interested or would like to learn more, please contact Kristen Clark, MOHASC Director, at Kristen.Clark@state.mn.us.

In addition to a productive planning session for the upcoming MN State Fair booth and re-launch of the MOHASC Library Display Program, attendees were able to enjoy a tour of the facility and meet-and-greet with some of the TRC Ambassador birds.

Thank you for your partnership, TRC!

WHO Updates Bacterial Priority Pathogens List

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently updated its list of bacterial pathogens it considers the biggest threats to human health.

The 2024 WHO Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (WHO BPPL) is an important tool in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Building on the 2017 edition, the 2024 WHO BPPL updates and refines the prioritization of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens to address the evolving challenges of antibiotic resistance. The list categorizes these pathogens into critical, high, and medium priority groups to inform research and development (R&D) and public health interventions.

The 2024 WHO BPPL covers 24 pathogens, spanning 15 families of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens and acts as a guide for prioritizing R&D and investments in AMR, emphasizing the need for regionally tailored strategies to effectively combat resistance. It targets developers of antibacterial medicines, academic and public research institutions, research funders, and public–private partnerships investing in AMR R&D, as well as policy-makers responsible for developing and implementing AMR policies and programs.

To access the updated BPPL, visit WHO Bacterial Priority Pathogens List 2024.

The Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB) recently released their latest recommendations report on collaborative global leadership needed to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Guided by the foundational concepts and the urgent need to combat AMR globally, the report provides four main recommendations on global priorities and nine recommendations on specific U.S. actions to address this pressing global health threat.

The report was compiled by the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Working Group, and was voted on and approved by the full council at the 25th PACCARB Public Meeting on May 21, 2024.
