Creating Bridges to Meet Community Needs
Spotlight on Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services
Meeker-McLeod-Sibley (MMS) Community Health Services has been working on data driven, health equity initiatives for almost a decade. However, their current work stems from a data gap realized through their most recent Health Equity Data Analysis (HEDA). HEDA focuses on identifying health inequities among specific groups. The analysis showed that Hispanic residents were underrepresented in their area’s data collection.
MMS staff responded by ensuring that the questions used in the HEDA tool were translated and culturally appropriate. They considered the cultural connotations of the tool’s word choices when conducting the survey. The staff collecting responses worked to establish trusted relationships with the Hispanic community with the goal of collecting the most accurate data possible and connecting with community members who might not otherwise participate.

“We’ve had a great response from community members in learning and growing together.” – Vlada Gladis, Health Educator, Sibley County Public Health and Human Services (Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services)
Through these conversations, MMS staff deepened their understanding of the Hispanic community and barriers to health its members often face, such as poor nutrition, limited exercise options, language barriers, immigration status, access to and quality of health care, transportation, mental health issues, racism, and more.

There is joy in equity work - "bee" in it!
Message from Shor, Project Supervisor
We have been busy bees organizing regional gatherings and planning for the summer and beyond. Spring welcomes exciting energy to get things moving and to soak in the delight of the world around us.
Members of our team got to experience some delight when we presented at the Minnesota Public Health Association (MPHA) Annual Conference on April 25th! Little did we know that we would be in a giant ballroom on a stage with microphones. That's always a fun surprise. It was also good to have a truly engaged audience as we discussed the intersections between narrative and health equity and how deeply important it is to be conscious of shaping transformative narratives that center health equity at the core. We received such wonderful feedback that we will be offering this training to the Minnesota Health Equity Networks communities over the summer. Date forthcoming!
|
As spring continues to delight us, I hope you pause and take a breath of air. Let the sun touch your skin, and remember that, even with all the hardship and discernment that is part of doing health equity work, there is also joy. When we allow ourselves to revel in the things that bring us delight, we are performing an act of care for ourselves and our communities. It is an act of solidarity with the ongoing work of health equity. Working from an empty cup is challenging, so fill your cup with small delights and breathe in the life-affirming energy that they bring.
Buzzzzzzz,
shor

Reflections and activity highlights from the regional coordinators.
Hello! As a health equity network coordinator, I am fortunate to witness the tremendous efforts of network members in advancing health equity in Central Minnesota.
For the past two years in my role, I've cherished the relationships I have formed with my team and you, the network members. Your daily work to create equitable communities is impactful and enriching. Amplifying your voices in gatherings and other settings has been a rewarding experience, and I am excited to further foster these relationships with you all.
|
Another rewarding aspect of my role is hearing about the Minnesota Health Equity Network grantees' unique initiatives to build relationships with community partners. In the Central Region, Stearns County Health & Human Services held training sessions with members of the Somali community (Bridge Healing Center) and LatinX community (Fe-y-Justicia). These engagements have led to listening sessions to better serve clients' needs. I am excited to continue facilitating a space to come together and build relationships. -Fatuma (Fa) Youb, Central Coordinator
