School nutrition ruling aligns with national strategy

In 2022, the White House shared its National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. This April, the USDA is expected to issue a final rule updating federal school nutrition standards, including a groundbreaking effort to limit added sugars in school foods, consistent with the Strategy.

The Public Health Law Center created an easy-to-use summary of the National Strategy components to better understand the U.S. plan to end hunger by 2030.

Join the Healthy Minnesota Partnership

and help us create the next statewide health improvement framework!

The statewide health improvement framework is a multi-year action plan to address issues identified by the statewide health assessment. We need many organizations to participate in this process, including community-based organizations.

All are invited to participate. We are especially interested in recruiting community-based organizations that represent racially and ethnically diverse communities, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities.

If you or your organization work to ensure all people in Minnesota enjoy healthy lives and communities, contact us or come to a meeting. Share this email with others that might be interested, too.

New space raises garden opportunities in Zumbro

When the Zumbro Education District (ZED) moved to a new building in Dodge County, the space opened up opportunities for healthier living for their students. The new location had an open area that they wanted to dedicate to gardening for students and staff.

The school garden includes raised gardening beds for growing vegetables, herbs, fruit, and native and ornamental perennial flowers. All students who attend classes at the ZED main building, which includes students with special needs from kindergarten to age 21 and students in the Area Learning Center (ALC) Program, will use the garden. Having this school garden provides learning opportunities in science, nutrition, and cooking, and is also a beautiful space for classes to gather for lessons, art projects, and more.

SHIP funds covered the costs of the lumber to build three raised garden beds, soil, and three different fruit trees. Since building the gardens, ZED also built fencing around the garden area and purchased other gardening supplies. ZED’s goal is to give students an opportunity to be involved with the entire process of growing and bring food from the garden to the table.

They are also working to create a garden that nurtures native plants and pollinators, giving students a chance to learn about the importance of native plants and animals. The creation and on-going maintenance of the garden created team building opportunities and also provided for-credit work experiences for the ALC.

The Zumbro Education District is made up of six different member districts from around the area. ZED’s programs range from birth to three-years to future transition to success. There are up to 150 students enrolled in ZED along with over 75 staff who all can be involved with the garden.text.
