Celebrating 50 Years of WIC
This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Since the opening of the first clinic in 1974, WIC has been committed to improving maternal and child outcomes.
Beginning this month, the National WIC Association (NWA) will publish a monthly partner toolkit recognizing an important theme, accomplishment, or milestone of the WIC program.
MDH WIC intends to celebrate throughout the year by using the monthly toolkits including social media ideas. We encourage all local agencies to join us in showcasing the decades-long positive impact of WIC.
January's theme, "The First Clinic," revisits the transformative year of 1974, when WIC's inaugural clinic opened its doors in Pineville, Kentucky.
The Pineville clinic's inception was more than a local milestone; it was a trailblazing moment that set the stage for progress nationwide. The opening of the first clinic marked the beginning of what would become a 50-year legacy of improving health outcomes for countless families through WIC.
Please take a few minutes to watch the first clinic video: WIC 50: The First Clinic.
In addition, the Saving the Children: The Story of WIC was created several years ago by the National WIC Association and highlights how WIC began and is well worth the time to watch as well.
Topic of the month – media and young children
Digital and traditional media are widely accessible in most homes and everywhere else people go. For many, there are very few times during the day when they aren’t connected by some type of an electronic device. Media, in all forms, can affect the way children engage and develop. Discover ways to educate and support the families we serve to make smart media choices for their whole family.
Media and Young Children: Topic of the Month will cover media recommendations, risks of overuse, resources, and tips for talking with parents.
Local agency staff should talk to their supervisor for approval before registering for training.
