Open positions on the MN Rural Health Advisory Committee

The Minnesota Department of Health's Rural Health Advisory Committee (RHAC) has several open positions and is seeking applicants. RHAC is a legislatively mandated, statewide forum for rural health interests, and features a diverse committee membership. To see all of the positions currently open for application and to apply, view the Minnesota Secretary of State's Board/Commission: Rural Health Advisory Committee webpage. Minnesota Trauma-Informed Emergency Recovery (MnTIER)

The Regional Behavioral Health Coordinators (RBHC) from the Minnesota Department of Health's Emergency Preparedness & Response Division have announced a new training opportunity, Minnesota Trauma-Informed Emergency Recovery (MnTIER). This is a six-month facilitated, web-based training program that will provide a framework for guiding the planning and operations of disaster response and recovery that is specific to communities throughout Minnesota. The training begins Tuesday, January 9, 2024, and is held on Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 12p.m. CST. CEUs are available.  Register online through MN.TRAIN, using Course ID 1114193. OPEN: Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Employee Scholarship Grant Program

The Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) employee scholarship grant program, authorized by Minnesota Statutes Section 144.1503, was established for the purpose of assisting qualified HCBS providers fund employee scholarships for education and training in nursing and other health care fields. Grant funds must be used to cover costs related to a course of study that is expected to lead to career advancement with the provider or in the HCBS field. OPEN: Minnesota Health Care Loan Forgiveness

The purpose of Minnesota’s Health Care Loan Forgiveness program is to recruit and retain health care professionals to needed areas and facilities in Minnesota. The Loan Forgiveness program funds various health care professionals serving in high-need areas. Applications are due Saturday, January 6, 2024. OPEN: Rural Community Health Center Apprenticeship Grant

The Rural Community Health Center Apprenticeship Grant supports registered apprenticeship programs in federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) operating in rural Minnesota. The goal of the funding is to support the rural primary care workforce by establishing new FQHC registered apprenticeship programs or funding costs of existing FQHC registered apprenticeship programs in rural parts of the state. OPEN: Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Training Grant Program

The Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Training Grant Program authorized by 2023 Session Law Chapter 70, Article 5, Section 8 [144.1509], is established to award grants for the development of pediatric mental health training programs that are located in outpatient primary care clinics. The training programs are designed to increase confidence, skills, and awareness of mental health resources among pediatric primary care providers caring for the mental health needs of pediatric patients. OPEN: Rural Hospital Capital Improvement Grant

The Rural Hospital Capital Improvement Grant awards eligible rural hospitals for modernization projects to update, remodel or replace aging hospital facilities and equipment necessary to maintain the operations of a hospital. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2024. For more information, please contact Health.RuralHospitalGrants@state.mn.us

OPEN: Rural Hospital Planning and Transition Grant

The Rural Hospital Planning and Transition Grant program helps small hospitals (50 or fewer beds) preserve or enhance access to health services through planning or implementation projects. OPEN: Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) 

The purposed of the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program is to educate and train the health and supportive care workforces to care for older adults by collaborating with community partners. Applicants will address care gaps and improve health outcomes for older adults by integrating geriatrics with primary care and other appropriate specialties using the Age-Friendly Health Systems Framework. Applications are accepted until 11:59 p.m. ET, Monday, February 26, 2024

OPEN: Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)

The Nurse Faculty Loan Program provides funding to accredited schools of nursing to establish and operate a student loan fund and provide loans to students enrolled in advanced nursing degree programs who are committed to becoming nurse faculty. In exchange for completion of up to four years of post-graduation full-time nurse faculty employment in an accredited school of nursing, the program authorizes cancellation of up to 85 percent of the original student loan amount (plus interest thereon). The program also encourages Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to serve as full-time preceptors within an academic-practice partnership framework. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. ET, Monday, February 5, 2024

Opportunities

Frontline Indigenous Partnership Ohiyesa Premedical Program

This year-long educational program is designed to engage and support Native American tribal and/or community college students interested in pursuing a health care career, with a program focused on the physician pathway. The program includes quarterly virtual group meetings, individual meetings with faculty sponsors and mentors, and a three-week summer program on-site at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Applications are due by Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Webinar: The Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program in Rural Areas

The Rural Health Information Hub is hosting an hour-long webinar to review recent recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health & Human Services on Monday, December 11, at 12:00 p.m. Central. Registration is required and free. The session will present findings from the Committee’s work, including participation from HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and include a discussion of the resulting policy brief. A recording will be available after the live event.

Staff News

Meet our new Healthcare Workforce Analysis Program staff!

Kelsey Besse and kidsKelsey Besse, MPH (she/her/ hers), is a military veteran and seasoned healthcare researcher, specializing in research to support Medicaid, Medicare, and Commercial populations within Minnesota. Kelsey holds a Masters of Public Health in Community Health Promotion from the University of Minnesota and has experience at the non-profit, managed care, state, and federal government levels. Her expertise lies in program evaluation, clinical quality measurement, and the design of healthcare interventions to address health-related social needs and health equity. She is thrilled to be a part of the Health Workforce Unit, where her passion for healthcare and rural communities aligns perfectly!

Megan LoewMegan M. Loew, PhD (she/her/hers), brings with her ten plus years of research experience aimed to increase health-related quality of life and translational research dissemination. Megan has a background in health psychology and as a behavioral healthcare researcher. She has worked at DHS and in academic medical centers on research and clinical teams to decrease health care barriers and advance integrated health care efforts for patients and providers. Recent topics of interest include optimizing telehealth efforts, survey psychometrics, promoting cultural and linguistically appropriate standards. Top values in research projects include mixed-method designs, strength-based frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration, and elevating community voices.

Maddie Weirick, MPHMaddie Weirick, MPH (she/her/hers), recently graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health with a Master of Public Health degree in Community Health Promotion and minors in Health Equity and Epidemiology. Maddie has experience in both social and biological research settings and has worked on projects including the assessment of Minnesota nurses’ attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs regarding the use of psychedelics in healthcare settings, influenza vaccine effectiveness and optimization, and SARS-CoV-2 antibody response. She has experience in healthcare workforce survey design and dissemination, evaluation, and data visualization. Maddie is interested in the intersections of rural health, sexual health, LGBTQ+ health, and health equity and is passionate about increasing equitable access to healthcare in Minnesota.
