Do not inadvertently give RSV vaccines (Abrysvo or Arexvy) to infants. CDC has received several reports of this happening when the infant should have received the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab).

Vaccine providers who carry both nirsevimab (for use in infants and young children) and RSV vaccines (for use in older adults and pregnant people) should be especially diligent in following vaccine administration safety procedures to prevent errors. To minimize risk of errors, store RSV vaccine and monoclonal antibodies in their original packaging on different shelves and clearly label them. Also ensure the seven rights of vaccine administration have been performed:

  • Right patient
  • Right time
  • Right vaccine and diluent
  • Right dosage
  • Right route, needle length, and technique
  • Right site
  • Right documentation

In the event RSV vaccine (Abrysvo or Arexvy) was administered to an infant:

Promptly report the error to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
