Horizon Public Health drives health equity efforts with revitalized committee
Network member spotlight: Health Equity Action Team (HEAT), Horizon Public Health
In July 2022, Horizon Public Health began a collective effort to revitalize their Health Equity Committee. Located in West Central Minnesota, Horizon Public Health serves Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens, and Traverse Counties.
“We wanted to bring the committee back and have clear objectives around how they would be the driving force behind the health equity priorities of the agency.” - Angie Hasbrouck, Health Educator, Horizon Public Health
The internal committee adopted a new name, the “Health Equity Action Team” (HEAT), and rewrote the organization’s health equity policy. They updated their health equity language to create shared terms and understanding within the agency.
"Everyone started with a different understanding of Health Equity. If we are able to say what it is and what it means to us, it changes the whole conversation." – Angie Hasbrouck
HEAT is focusing on data disaggregation, which is helping identify trends and inequities that can be used to design activities and engage communities. Horizon Public Health also revamped its mission, vision, principles, and strategic goals, making health equity a guiding practice.
"With updated policy, mission, and strategies, we can direct our work and intentionally use an equity lens in all we do." - Angie Hasbrouck

Join us in recognizing Native American History Month and at Network gatherings
Checking in with Shor, Project Supervisor
Greetings Networks communities,
As we begin to experience the signs of winter this November, we also welcome Native American History Month. This month is a time to actively learn from, reflect on, and celebrate our Tribal communities. I invite you to find an event to attend, rekindle a relationship, or ask someone to connect over a cup of coffee. It's also a great time to research the Tribal Nations near you and learn more about the Indigenous communities in other parts of the state and world.
One excellent learning opportunity is at our next training, Historical Trauma and Trauma-Informed Practices, on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. with Christine Smith. In this virtual training, we will explore how the legacies of trauma and resilience impact communities and how we can apply this knowledge to co-create more trauma-informed and healing organizations. While the training is not specifically about Tribal communities, it will inform how we can approach our work, partnerships, and organizational cultures in more caring and nuanced ways. You can register here: MN Health Equity Networks Training: Historical trauma and trauma-informed practices registration - Webex
We also look forward to seeing you at our Statewide Gathering on Dec. 7, from noon to 2 p.m. Bring your lunch, a friend, and dig into systems change work with Susan Brace-Adkins! You can register here: MN Health Equity Networks Statewide Gathering registration - Webex
Much care to you all in this season of relationships and celebration, shor
