MDH Follow Along Program Grant Opportunity
A new grant opportunity is available for qualified organizations to assist the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in reaching populations that have been historically underserved by its Follow Along Program. Utilizing funds from the Healthy Beginnings, Healthy Families Act, eligible organizations will recruit and deploy a group of Community Connectors to provide culturally and linguistically inclusive outreach and navigation support for families as they enroll and participate in the Follow Along Program.
Applications are due Nov. 8 at noon.

"The Valuable Role WIC Staff Play in Preventing and Addressing Iron Deficiency Anemia"
Webinar Date: Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023: 8:30 -10 a.m.
Description: One of the cornerstone aspects of the WIC program is the prevention of iron deficiency anemia among participants. Join former WIC CPA, Melissa Nelson, to discuss the vital role WIC staff play in preventing iron deficiency anemia. Together, we will explore the strategies, tools, and collaborations that WIC staff can apply to prevent and address this pressing public health issue, ultimately improving the well-being of our communities.
Objectives:
- Describe the impact of iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy and early childhood.
- Explain the role WIC staff play in identifying iron deficiency anemia.
- Know when a hemoglobin level is considered high risk and when a referral to a health care provider is necessary.
- Identify food sources of iron, including sources in vegetarian/vegan diets.

"Addressing Perinatal Loss and Bereavement in the Community"
Description: In this prerecorded presentation, Dr. Lindsey Wimmer will review the core principles of bereavement care for families experiencing the death of a baby during pregnancy or infancy. Participants will learn practical approaches to offering compassion and support and gain an appreciation for the complexities of this grief journey.
Objectives:
- Describe holistic care for families preparing for or enduring perinatal death.
- Review racial disparities in perinatal loss and cultural implications for bereavement.
- Identify resources available to health professionals and families.
