Addressing the health inequities Latine people encounter
Network member spotlight: Communities Organizing Latino Power and Action (COPAL)
COPAL 2023 Promotoras de Salud with their training certificates
Communities Organizing Latino Power and Action, or COPAL, is a member-based organization that has been working to improve the quality of life for Minnesota Latine communities since 2018. Cecilia Calabria is COPAL’s Health and Wellness Director.
“We are beginning to break down the barriers Latines face when accessing healthcare,” - Cecilia Calabria, Health and Wellness Director, COPAL
COPAL connects families to essential services when they need them most. At the onset of COVID-19, COPAL launched the Navigator’s Hotline to connect Latine people to public benefits and resources like food, housing, and healthcare.
In 2022, COPAL welcomed the first cohort of Promotoras de Salud, or Health Community Educators. Promotoras are trained to discuss sensitive health topics and play a critical role in connecting Latine families with resources and health information in Spanish. Calabria said COPAL plans to expand their programming in the future to reach more Latine people.
“COPAL envisions a future where Latine communities thrive and are fully empowered to lead significant change in their communities and beyond.” – Cecilia Calabria

Checking in with Shor, Project Supervisor
Happy fall, everyone!
Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the cool air and changing leaves. Recently, I read a quote that goes something like, “Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let go.” This invitation to let go is a concept and practice important to the community we build in the Networks and what we do together to advance health equity in Minnesota. It means letting go of patterns, thoughts, and practices that create injustice.
While such changes might be unnerving and challenging, they will ultimately open doors to new ways of being.
We invite you to explore these new ways of being with us:
-
Regional Gatherings – October and early November: Dates and registration can be found on our website. Each regional coordinator used your feedback in planning the gatherings and will spotlight the health equity work happening throughout Minnesota.
-
Trauma-informed Training – November 16, 10:00 a.m. to noon: We will be joined by Christine Smith to learn about what it means to practice our work in trauma-informed ways. Attendees will discuss how to create organizations that have trauma-informed and healing-centered cultures. This intentional effort is an equity strategy, as equity work happens not just inside our organizations but in tandem with our communities, too.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon,
Shor Salkas
